How public are you with your knives?

What's worse is they spout their flawed failed logic as intellectually superior.

This is from the OP. He asked the question because "to some degree it is looked down upon/scares the sheeple".

I'll submit to you this: It is the fault of the offended/scared/uneducated public that they feel anything less than comfortable around a law abiding American.

You can be offended/scared all you want if you spot my fixed blade. But remember, it is YOU who have CHOSEN to take offense and feel fear.

This is a common feeling among law abiding knife owners. However, everyone is law abiding until they are not. When things seem out of place, it sets off people's alarms.

The majority of people who feel the need to concealed carry do not trust their fellow citizens, and that's why they carry. I don't see why we would expect those same attitudes of mistrust to be any different when applied to knives.

If you are carrying a 12" knife walking past my kids school, my first thought is probably not going to be, "Oh hey look. That guy looks like a fine upstanding citizen exercising his knife rights." Just sayin.

So much hate against California.
My daughter started going to gun ranges here with 3 and her own knives and one even fixed. Gasp.
Still wouldn't carry anything in school or Wholefoods ;-)

Soon I'm going out publically again with a knife...probably one with a 4.6 inch blade length.
How will the country survive? :D

And while your eyeballing the law abiding citizen who took the time to read the law, the joe blow hiding a weapon walked right by you. Lol

So what exactly did your fear do again?

If I left the knives at home, these pictures would not exist:

A world without these pictures would be a little bit more sad.
Don't support policies that make the world more sad. :)

Using emotion for a political agenda, you have figured out the secret to media!

By what criteria will you come up with the "legal" number of inches? Solely based on what makes you "feel" scared? Banning things on look? Or the distance to the human heart? That ones surprisingly short, I think 3ish inches could reach. Or are you banning things that can hack, but stabby is OK? Is this going to be criminal, or just another civil offence to drum up some cash?

By what criteria do we come up with "legal" speed limits? It's the same basic principle.

The answer for speed limits is both arbitrary and common sense. 65mph is generally legal on highways and 66mph is generally not (there are exceptions, but you get the point). I generally break the legal speed limit every time I drive on the highway. I bet you do too. Usually I drive between 70 and 75. But this doesn't mean that there should be no speed limit. Speed limits let the cops selectively enforce the law and this keeps speeds manageably safe. Weaving in and out at 70mph will get you busted. Driving at 80mph will often get you busted. We all live with this.

The most common length restriction on knives that I've encountered or read about is a 3" limit for general carry in public. That's a bummer for me since I prefer blades in the 3.5" range but then, I find 55mph speed limits on some hiways to be a bummer since I prefer to drive 70.

But, I accept the need for some roads to have a lower speed limit and I accept the need for some higher crime municipalities to have blade length restrictions.

And finally and painfully trying to get this back on on-topic, I let these laws inform my behavior. I don't drive 70 in a school zone just like I don't carry a knife into a courthouse or school. I'm very careful when I drive 70 in a 55 zone (and I do, just like you do) just like I'm more careful when I carry a 3.5" bladed knife in a place with a 3" limit. And I don't clean my fingernails with a legal knife while sitting on a park bench even though it's legal just like I don't cut people off or tailgate in my car because while legal, this is just acting like a jerk. It upsets people needlessly. And lastly, when somebody cuts me off needlessly, I honk at them to let them know they're being a jerk. I don't worry about upsetting people who feel it's their right to be jerks in public.

True

My point was that a large knife is out of place in much of modern society. Whether that knife is carried for love of the blade, utility, lack of foresight, bad intentions, or whatever reason, it is often out of place and therefore sets off people's warning bells.

In my example if that guy were doing yardwork with a machete or cutting up some ribs for a barbecue, it wouldn't be out of place at all, b/c food prep and landscaping are places where we do use such knives regularly.

I guess I just don't understand why people are surprised by the general public's reaction.

I live in Washington State and some people don't do well when they see my knives or happen to glance my concealed carry.

Is this PC? :D

I don't either because I tend to be somewhat confrontational. But one day I'll get the crap beat out of me..... They started the damn photo speed enforcement near my house (50 MPH on 4 lane hwy). You don't want to drive 70 mph there.

When I won the custom sheath for the BK7 (a Becker knife with a 7 inch blade), I brought it to the Tim Hortons to show my dad.
Put it right on the table, along with our coffee and muffins.
I wasn't waving it around like Sinbad, but I'm pretty sure the girls behind the counter saw it...and didn't care.

He looked at it, checked out the sheath and the fit, then I put it away.

If I can have a 7 inch blade in a coffee shop with no adverse reactions, maybe all of you who are getting negative reactions need to change something...and it ain't the knife you're carrying. :D

I live and work inside Seattle city limits, and only once did anybody mention anything to me about my knives, and he was a local coffee shop owner who noticed my multi-tool and decided to start up a conversation about what it was and which one he carried, which in turn led me to inquire about the BM940 I saw in his pocket.

That's it, and I've been carrying for many years, both in and out of Seattle, and yet I have yet to feel at all judged.

Now, the gun you have is probably the real draw for people's concern, but since I don't know what kind of people you hang out with I can't be sure.

I'm to the point where I look for knives clipped to everyone's pockets. Not out of fear, but as an excuse to strike up a conversation when I'm bored. The conversation typically goes as such:
Me: "What kind of knife do you have there?"
Mike Oxlong: " It's a (insert bladed tool here, usually a multitool but sometimes I get lucky and they pull out a Benchmade automatic for me to see :))"
Me: "Cool. I've got a (insert whatever folder/automatic/Bali-Song I happen to be carrying that day)"
Mike Oxlong: "That's cool. Thanks for the help. See you around"

I have not been carrying knives long maybe 6 months now and have had separate cases were people didn't think carrying a "weapon" with me was necessary. The worst incident was at my work. A Guy and his Wife said that people that need to carry knives or guns with them only do it because they live in fear. And another time at the bank a lady told me weapons should not be brought on private property. 2 incidents is not a ridiculous amount but seems high for the little amount of time I have been carrying knives.
I usually wear dress pants and button up shirts so maybe seeing a knife on me looks out of place ?

Oh and don't get me started on the time I wore a "Black Rifles matter"shirt to go workout in. That was one heck of a morning at the YMCA!!

Haha now I just use it to do yard work.
