Injured Outdoorsman Needs Forum Search Help

Hi Scott,
I was away on vacation and I was looking back through the threads of the past week and came across this. All I can say is that you sound positive about and accepting of your situation, which is a lesson to all of us. Adapt and survive. I'd say good luck to you, but I don't think you'll need it:)

You have use for a Vic Farmer?

This one-legged thing might slow me down, but it ain't stopping me.
I will be out on the Columbia River all day fishing for some Sturgeon. Yeah, one of our local bars is having a Sturgeon durby, on valentines day.

I tell yeah, I had to work up the courage to beg my wife to let me go!!! She was cool with it. I just got to figure out something really nice for her. Maybe I will do the dishes. ;)

Anyhow, I got a couple packages in the mail today, and I will write you guys later today or tomorrow. I'm not sleeping that well so I'm sure I will be pretty worn out by the end of the day.

Later guys,

Scott

On the Columbia River fishing for Sturgeon - I can't think of any other way I'd want to spend valentine's day :)

I've never caught one - post some pics if you get a big one. Take 'er easy.

Wow, seems I missed this thread, and now it's 5 pages long?!

You've got a great attitude about this whole thing, that's the first key to a quick recovery. I hope the new leg works well for you.

I'm not a least bit surprised with the generosity of the folks here. They are an outstanding group.:thumbup:

If you ever need anything, or ever plan on coming down to old Cali, definitely look me up. Anyone who fishes, is a friend of mine!:D Unless you leave your garbage all over the lake, then I hate you.:p

P.S. You could take one of the blades you are getting, and ask the doctor to make a slit in the side of the leg for the blade to fit into, so it sticks out the side of your leg. Put a slit in an old pair of pants for the blade to go through.
You wouldn't wear it like this all the time, but whenever you need a good laugh, just "stab" yourself in the leg and walk around, and watch people's reactions.

Never mind that old "stab yourself in the leg" joke! These prostheses aren't as simple as an old block of wood.

Breakthru62, Just wanted to wish you a speedy recovery so you can get back out :) The guys here in W&SS are top notch, you'll never find a better group of awesome people. Right on, all of you!

Wow, I just found this thread, and it looks like others have already stepped up and sent things your way.

I wish the best for your recovery. If there is anything else you need to round out your gear, just let me know and I'll see if I can help out.

Paint it camo??? Thats a great idea!!! I'm some what of a camo freak. I don't go overboard with it til hunting season.

Yeah, I hear that prostetics are spendy. Any where from $5,000 to $30,000 for my permanet one. And mine is going to be pretty basic since it's a "below the knee" type. There was a fellow in the doctors office who had a full leg one that was computerized. He had a "cell phone" type charger for it. I never did get to find out how it worked, put I was really blown away that it had a chip in it.

The fishing.........Well, it was one of the worst sturgeon days I have ever had. When we got to our spot, it was a slack tide. I caught 2 smaller sturgeon 30 inches or so in the first 2 hours. The current started picking up but my partners got bored and wanted to try some different spots. Well, we tried about 5 different spots through out the day. We only caught 2 more "shakers".
We go to the bar for the raffle after the weigh in, and start talking to people we know. Come to find out that after a couple hours after we left our first spot, the guys along that stretch started hammering them, especially in MY honey hole. Heck, they even caught a couple oversized.

A keeper sturgeon is between 42" and 60"---nose to the tip of the tail, but from the first of this year, you gotta measure from the nose to the 'v' in the tail.....38" to 54" using the new measurement. These fish get up to something like 14 feet and live almost 200 years. Crazy huh?

Anyhow, my whole body is paying for it today. I usually wake up with my whole body sore and hurting, but today is different. As I can say is I'm really really really paying for it. My knee and leg was so swollen last night I was fairly worried about it. It has gone down alot, but I'm keeping an eye of it today.

Have a good day amigos,

Scott

Sounds like a great day fishing nonetheless. I'd love to catch a sturgeon, there is no open season for sturgeon around here since they are trying to get the population back up. I'm not even sure the last time anyone saw one around here.

Sucks to hear your body is aching today - Hope you get better quickly.

I know that right know when I play hard I will pay for it. Sometimes the pain is totally worth it. And yes, it was a great day of fishing. We even had decent weather. Next time, I'm bringing that extra jacket!!! Brrrrr.

The one thing that I really hoped would not happen has.......

I can not finish getting fitted for my leg, or get a leg, because the insurance company(s) are not cooperating. This is what I was told by the office that is doing the fitting. I should have a leg and I should be walking this week.

So, I'm going back to work on Monday and I'm going to fabricate my own. Then, I'm billing all insurance companies involved for my labor, materials, and wasting my time. I'm charging for overtime too.

An older gentleman pulled out in front of me as Im cruising down the highway-causing me to t-bone him. Then, I get hit as a pedestrian by another driver who wasnt paying attention causing my foot to be "degloved" of almost all of the skin, destroyed ankle, torn off heel and achillies tendon, and crushed toes. It felt about as good as it sounds. I actually cried when I saw the pictures.

I honestly don't care what the problem is that is holding all this up. It should not matter. Period.

Wanna know something else?!?! In Oregon, all that any insurance company has to pay is what the insured persons policy covers. So, if you have a $500,000 in medical bills, and there is only $300,000 on the table, guess who gets stuck with the remaining bills............
Doesn't matter who is at fault or not.

Where is the justice?? Just like everything else, it is all about money.

Shoot, man. Sorry to hear that you're falling victim to the inherent injustice and unreasonable bureaucracy of the insurance system. I hope that things turn around soon - sounds like you're about due for a break.

Keep positive and let us know what we can do to help.

All the best,

- Mike

Breakthru,

Prayers sent for a divine intervention that one of these insurance companies "steps up" and does what's right.
