Maybe those owed could post on his FB page , he seems to constantly be able to post there , his latest was "Never Forgive A Traitor" re: Jane Fonda.

Taking $$$ and not delivering or responding could easily be seen as being a traitor to his craft.

Good to know none of the rules of the forum apply here on this thread. I contacted a source in TN to look into this way back when I first posted on this. Its not like I can drop everything and run over there kick Larry in the butt to make him cough up a blade tempered with Chemo. The big difference here is I didn't give up on the man, I expect this situation to get fixed when Larry by himself or with the help of some friends can fix it; most likely spring 2011.

I do have some new strong opinions about some of the people that posted here but I will save those for chit chat around a forge.

New strong opinions, well, we all live and learn. I don't believe you've changed many opinions of yourself with your performance here. Your story changes too often for us to try to keep up.

What rules have been violated, and by whom?
I can appreciate you being disturbed at the way Mr. Harley is being treated on this thread. Seems like a good guy who found himself in a tough spot.
The fact is that several people here are out alot in money/knives, with no evidence that things will be made right. "Give up on the man"? Not sure what to say about that. I just want my knife back.
As I've stated before, I remain hopeful that Mr. Harley will attempt to regain his good reputation and pray for his recovery. He would do himself worlds of good by responding here with some semblance of a plan to honor his debts.
As to your strong opinions, I reckon we all have em', and this seems to be the place to voice em'.

Just to explain, for LorenzoL, about ordering a second knife through Larry; I had many an email with Larry re: his little stuff up. He explained that he had done wrong and assured me he would rectify the problem. By that time I had passed the knife onto a friend, who by the way, didn't care about the knifes grind. He just wanted a "stabber" for pig hunting and twisted my arm to take some cash that I didn't want! Anyway, Larry offered to fix the original knife but I declined and decided to start fresh with a new one.
So, here I am trying to make sense of the situation and hopefully get my knife, or, my money back. Is there a consumer protection organisation in the States to contact when people are "ripped off" by crims? It is hard to get help when you're not in the U.S. so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Perhaps you could offer some assistance LorenzoL as you appear keen to put in your $0.02 worth???

I am sorry if I offended you with my post. All I was trying to say is that if a maker cannot make it right the first time chances are it is not worth insisting buying more stuff from him.
By letting him off the hook about that bad grind you gave him the impression that you were a "cool" customer that would not mind him taking other "liberties", like taking years to make your knife.
I wish I could help but sadly there is very little one can do to force a maker to make good on his obligations, just look at the Brad Duncan situation. Whether you live here or abroad does not change much, I would think.
Again, I apologize for the way I phrased my earlier post.

Thanks LorenzoL for your kind words. Its a very frustrating situation to be in as I'm sure you can appreciate. I hope there aren't too many others involved in this ordeal and hopefully Larry will see the error of his ways and right his wrongs!

I just noticed that Larry posted on his facebook page (Nov. 17th) that he's back to making knives. Hope this bodes well for those of us waiting on em'.

I've got to give you points for optimism. :)

I have no dog in this fight, just a few thoughts that have occurred to me as I read through this.

First, I to have contacted Larry about some knives. It APPEARS he does excellent work and I wouldn't mind having one of his blades. That said, I do NOT order knives from makers I do not know who ask for money in advance. I will look for one of his knives on the secondary market, and not order directly through him.

Second, you state he is your friend, but then state above how you have "contacted a source in TN to look into this". If you are his friend why are you not contacting him directly? Even if he is not a friend and just a maker you have had contact with in the past and respect, as it is apparent you do, why are you not contacting him directly?

I talk to every knifemaker I but knives from directly, some in person and some on the phone. If I ran across a thread such as this about them, bet your ass I would be on the phone saying, "whats going on?" and I would direct them to the thread and the concerns I have about how they are ruining their reputation.

It takes 30 years to build a reputation as a good knifemaker, but only 3 or 4 complaints about getting screwed (which the people here HAVE been) to ruin that reputation.

He admitted it himself and you told us to go read it again, which I did. He very clearly states he kept taking money and orders on knives he is physically unable to make. That is theft. It has nothing to do with his health, it has everything to do with his integrity. The first day he took an order for the money, knowing he was unable to make the knife at that time he sold himself out. If he is such a great guy and you are such a great friend let me ask you this: When he took money for orders did he tell the people "I am taking your money, but have no idea when I can make your knives due to teh cancerz".

EVERY TIME I order a custom knife without exception one of my questions is "when do you expect the knife to be completed". And they give me a time frame. Sometimes it is 3-4 months, a few have been 1+ years, but they always give me a time frame. What did he tell these people when he took their money? He was riddled with cancer and took money for a service that depends on him being healthy. He then spent that money.

1) he may not have survived
2) he may not have recovered enough to continue making knives
3) it may have taken him years to recover enough to return to making them.

He is a crook, I don't care if he is a nice guy, he is plain and simple a crook. He took money knowing full well at the time he was not able at that time, and may not be able at a future date, be able to preform the service he had been paid for.

And he did this quite a lot it carried him through his illness.

I have no compassions for him.

Again, if he is your friend get off your ass and drop a dime. Tell him to make things right AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and in ANY WAY HE CAN. Sell his house, return money and knives owed, whatever he needs to do to make things right.

So just out of curiosity I emailed him asking prices and how long the wait is for a knife. The answer was 4-6 months so obviously he is working on knives...there really is no excuse why those who are waiting for replacements or whatever should be waiting YEARS when he is taking new orders.

The man is a dishonest crook.

I think should read more like :

true that. this goes beyond disingenuous. it sounds to me like he has no intentions of completing the old orders that are already paid for. After all why should he do the "free" jobs when he has people who have paid right?...

...oh, wait...
