make your choice ! survival folder...

Since there isn't a choice in the situation, and I might end up on some remote island or near salt water, I would choose my brand new *drum roll*

Spyderco Pacific Salt with yellow handles and plain edge blade. This thing absolutely will not rust, has a very sturdy lockback, and is thick enough for me to not worry about breaking it if I need to baton or do something ridiculous with it.

I know this knife will hold up because I had one just like it but with black handles and that one has held up perfeclty over the past two years or so since I've had it. Remember guys, you can have the ultimate bad ass of knives, but that doesn't mean that good old oxidation won't come looking for them, just like death comes looking for us :D in survival situations.

1. Victorinox Alox Farmer
2. 550HG Griptilian

and possibly a 3rd depending on location,

3. 12" Ontario machete or my No. 2 Estwing hatchet.

buck 110 or wegner ranger or pacific salt in plain edge.

my vic one hand trekker saw alot of use while i was exploring australia. i only carried a vic one hand trekker and a mora clipper while i was in aussi for two months and managed ok.

as i see it the one main benefit of the vics over the others is that the vics have saws.

one thing about this thread is that its a tad bit broad, no survival situation given, no terrain type, no possible length/period of time (although most people lost are not sure of how long they will be lost for).

given that i'm required to survive in my neck of the woods i would most likely be carrying my spyderco, mainly because its my edc. although when i'm out hiking i take my vics and when i'm out camping i take my buck. when hiking i usually have a small fixed blade with me so i'm pretty comfortable with the fixed blade and vic combo. the vic mainly being used for the sawing purposes. when out camping i'm usually carrying alot more gear so the buck 110 seems to suffice as i will usually have an axe or a saw to do my chopping/sawing needs. but on a daily basis i carry the spydie.

having heard many times on the forum, especially this subforum that a survival knife is what you have on you at the time you need to survive it'll most likley be the salt, given that its the edc.

if the original question was changed a bit to add a scenario or possible location i would think it'd help give me (possibly others as well) give a more narrowed down choice. although again a survival knife is what you have on you during the time u need to survive with it but isnt there also the saying "the right tool for the right job?"

plus... we all have so many knives its hard to choose from :D

cheers,

JC

p.s. are you looking for a folder for survival purposes? if so rather then a poll perhaps you could give us some info and we can chip in our knowledge to help find a knife for ya. :)

Looks like yours is from the first production run Brian; I have a newer one, still a stout, heavy duty folder...I just don't like all the advertisement on the blade:barf: Despite all the logo's and stuff, it's a very heavy duty blade and a really good liner lock.

ROCK6

Used and abused since 2001 and still going strong. Mine is the one shown in the Vol 11/Solo video with Ron and Karen Hood.

take a pick
the folder you wish you had with you in a survival situation, but not depending on what that situation may be...
just what is the folder you would bet yor life on, regardless of situation
no lists of favorite, second favorite, two knives, no fixed blades..and so on
just one folder that you think may help in a survival scenario
you know what i mean...

thanks

Probably my OH Trekker.

I'll join the Buck 110 crowd on this one. Darn near impossible to break - or so it seems. Thats what you want if you are truly in a survival situation.

it sure feels tough, and with inteligent uses, its hard to brake it
anyway , in a survival situation i doubt anyone would start abusing their knife, digging holes and prying rocks, throwing it and so on, no matter what that knife would be, or how tough its supposed to be
