New Forum software thread. . .

Here's the thing: I hate hacking templates because once you've changed one, every time you upgrade software you have to edit it all over again. Certain things like fonts and sizes and colors are "set it and forget it" but moving things around like page numbers and stuff like that wind up being recurring changes. Multiply that by the number of templates, and the number of various styles requiring template changes, and it becomes a major undertaking.

I'm not saying I won't do it, but I have higher priorities at the moment.

In an ideal world, this would all be widget based so that individual widgets could be upgraded and it wouldn't affect the templates at all unless there was a major revision. As you can probably figure out, it isn't an ideal world.

So we can all assume the guys at vbulletin either never tested their stuff, have absolutely no aesthetic sense, or just hate us all.

All of the above?

Thanks for this forum Spark, it's sucking a little less each day. I wish you would have moved the old version to a different webhost but I'm sure you considered all of that. :)

The host wasn't the the problem. The software support stopping was.

Rat, they test it, but there's always problems. Lots and lots of them. Some of which never get addressed. For example, the color of the background of each post is governed by a variable named, appropriately enough, postbit_background. This has been broken since version 4.0.x I belive, and still hasn't been addressed; the software we upgraded to is now 4.1.2 (we upgraded from 3.8.7

Well you'v sure made a heckuva lot of progress since you started a few days ago. I can't wait to see this place a month from now. I bet you get it even nicer than it is now. Thanks again.

I'm working on one when I have free time.

Ok, forums just got taken down for a bit while we reconfigured vms. Doubled the cpu and things seem to be working better.

I don't know all the reconfiguration jargon , but I for one am really liking the new format and am experiencing no problems. I am getting used to it and am finding navigation easier. People tend to resist change , but I think this changeover will be a good benefit in the long run and people will adapt.

Thanks for all your hard work in putting this together.

Pete

I'm getting around okay now. Two things I can't wait to see. 1) Some background color to ease the glare of the blazing white background. 2) I forgot while I was posting the 1st thing.....what a dumb*ss!

Thanks Spark! I've never seen you this patient with us in all of my years of membership!! :D

Some background color to ease the glare of the blazing white background.

It is light blue, about the same as it was before the change. The only thing white is the bar with avatars and names, which used to be a slightly darker blue.

That bar is actually a light yellow. :(

There's a dark theme now for those of you who prefer that.

Dark grey looks good.

How do you get it to be dark gray? I tried a drop down in the lower left corner where you can make it large text and selected "Bold Gray" and the forum is black with white words now?

I remember #2 thing I'm hoping for is - for those big weird looking envelopes (icons) to go away. :barf: I think Spark said several pages back that it was "on the list" but not a priority.

on the bold gray theme, the profile page has the links, buttons in black on dark gray
the threads look more readable, though there still is room for tweaking the fonts and colors, and the contrast between the read and unread threads
thanks Spark,

The reversed out option is very cool, thanks! Tests have shown that reversed is better for the eyes.... especially if you spend as much time here as I do..... :o
