New Forum software thread. . .

I hate this
The last one was better
Most all of my surfing is on g2 and the names of everything are right next to eachother I liked them when they were stacked this is one of the reason I never went to the usual suspect forum and now u have made the same as them much harder to navigat just one complant from me tonight before I end up in the wtf thread that's ok though my membership is almost done anyway

If you read previous posts you'd see that constructive criticism is being taken to make the forum more user friendly...instead of having a tantrum and threatening to not renew membership, tell Spark what is going on with how you browse the forum. Be very specific so he can tackle these things, have a little patience mate.

Some browsers have add-ons that will let a user tweak the appearance of pages. I use the NoSquint add-on for Firefox whenever I run into a forum whose color scheme or text size doesn't appeal to me.

Tantrum grrrrrr tantrum grrrrrrr tantrum grrrrrrrrrr aaaaaaaaaaagrrrrrrr
It would be great if we had an option to use old styl
And being very specific is hard with this stupid phone it takes to long that is why I liked the old forum
And I will still stay a member I was planing to upgrade to platnum when mine ran out
But I still hate the new set up

For those who were wanting navigation at the top again, check out the new tabs I added in the Navbar - Forum Categories (which turns into a drop down with the main forum categories) and Exchange, which takes you straight to the Knife Exchange.

Much better - pretty much as easy as it was with the old site.

Lower breadcrumbs are back as well

Spark,

PM popup notifications lead to a 404 Not Found error if used to access the Private Message box.
However, the PM Notifications tab up at the top is working fine. :)

Not getting it in ie or chrome. What browser?

IE8. Someone shoot me a PM and I'll see if it repeats.

ETA: Dunno if it makes a difference... I usually click cancel on the open in new window option, then click view the message. If it happens again, I'll let you know.

Those of you who are saying it sucks, PLEASE BE SPECIFIC. If you can identify something in particular, I can work to change it. If you don't, and I have to guess, it's not going to get fixed. There's something like 5000 variables I can alter.

I dunno if this bugs anyone else, but the gradient at the bottom of each line separating posts in a forum is bugging my eyes.

Other than that the current color scheme works fine for me.

Also, why is the latest posts list on the frontpage so short now? I *think* right after the upgrade it was longer like the old one was.

Do super huge pics still break the entire thread table or do they just stretch out that single post now?

I have the brightness on my monitor turned way down. BF is by far the 'brightest' forum. JD and USN are both more muted. USN more so. Reversed out print is best for the eyes so this is the opposite of that. You could add a light grey or blue tint just to reduce the glare and then make the type bold. Just sayin....

You could adjust the brightness on your monitor....

Reversed (light text, dark background) gives me headaches. I prefer as close to "words on paper" as possible

Hey spark is there a way to mark subscribed threads as viewed? I still cant work it out...all my subscribed threads back to when i joined are highlighted as unread.

Thanks.

Anyone work this out? normally there is a "mark as read" option but for some reason i'm not finding it.

if you have a scroll wheel on your mouse hold ctrl + scroll up and it will make the text size larger and more readable. I did this last night, loving it.

Thanks a lot for that tip. This was the best thing I found all morning. It's hard to get old and blind haha. Like I had mentioned before...for all of those that do not like the color (white/black) of the page. Spark can add different views to the forum. The one I used to run had a tan page with black text, a light blue page with dark blue text, white page with black text and so on and so on.

You can just pick the view you want your forum experience to be. I'll attach a screen shot to show you where you can find it. It's up to him if he wants to add different styles so don't shoot the messenger. Just a suggestion. :)

I am really liking the new forum. I do agree with members names being bigger and more pronounced (bold) but these are all just tweaks. We'll get there. Thanks Spark for all your hard work on this. Much appreciated!

I asked about the site over in the Becker forum and got a number of similar responses about the "readability" of the forum. Several folks spoke to ideas about contrast. That idea is echoed in this thread as well.

Hell, this is fine with me. If I had one request, I wish the text when reading threads was solid black. It appears to be 70% or 80% gray right now, while, as I'm entering this text in the box, it looks to be solid black. Not a big deal to me, just a minor preference. Otherwise, being a fairly well trained survivalist, I will adapt and survive with the new look quite well. :D

Blues

A lot of what seems wrong or complicated about the new format is simply its unfamiliarity. Once you've found where everything is, it will become familiar again, and you'll be back to to focusing on content as automatically as before.

Except I can't read a lot of what's too small or poor contrast ...

the proportions are all wrong... icons too big, text too small, and the contrasts are off. bet this skin was designed by committee ;) probably it's eco-friendly and maximizes the use of pastels. puke. and i'm sure Spark will fix things. be better if there were user settings :)

I like it, however I haven't been here long, and I thought the place needed an update BAD! LOL! I don't approve of the color choices, the text needs to be darker and easier to read. Everything is too much the same tone, it looks pretty but it's not as functional. I'm sure they'll figure that part out.

One of the matters I raised had to to with the crowded look of the forum. It just seems busy because lots of information is pressed together tightly. One person said something about that idea.

Yeah, gotta say I hate it. The previous format's strength was in its simplicity. Not bagging Spark for trying to upgrade though, if it's gotta be done, it's gotta be done.

On forum views, the text just kind of crowds in together. I wonder if enlarging the thread titles could help a bit here. There's thread title, started by, date and time all bunched together there. And there's that gaudy, huge envelope at the left of every thread. Those are eyesores in my opinion.

Positives I see so far:
  • The added navigation links at the top are much better and lead to categorical views more like the old version.
  • The multiquote function absolutely rocks. So much easier to speak to multiple posters.
  • The blogs are going to be really cool once we get some good writers/posters putting up useful material.
