  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Osage is the new Black, er...Bog Oak...

Jules,
Might the darker be heartwood? Rings are very close together and, in many species, heartwood is darker and heavier.

I prefer Hickory Heartwood for shorter axe handles.

Could be Bill, like Brian said there are number of factors that could account for the different coloration. That's why I like Osage, so many different shades and changes over time.

Here's a good comparison of an osage bow that ages over the years. Basically, it's a function of UV light and oxidation.

I've definitely see it on a project I'm working on where there was sawdust that blocked the UV light from the wood store window. Looked like white spots where I cleaned it off.

My Hunter is darkening nicely. When it has been carried a lot outdoors in the sheath the top is visibly darker from light exposure. I try to store it so it evens out the color.

Love Osage. This thread is awesome.
Wish I had an osage Fiddleback, but here is one I did a while back. Pretty piece of wood.
