Might the darker be heartwood? Rings are very close together and, in many species, heartwood is darker and heavier.

I prefer Hickory Heartwood for shorter axe handles.

Could be Bill, like Brian said there are number of factors that could account for the different coloration. That's why I like Osage, so many different shades and changes over time.

My Hunter is darkening nicely. When it has been carried a lot outdoors in the sheath the top is visibly darker from light exposure. I try to store it so it evens out the color.

Wish I had an osage Fiddleback, but here is one I did a while back. Pretty piece of wood.
