In my opinion that's your opinion and it's both wrong and ignorant as you have no real facts to say things like I need to read. Iv read many articles since I was very young on this very site. You calling me a troll is also very ignorant as you have neither the proof or information of that. Most of what you said was your opinion and I don't disregard an opinion however it is an opinion none the less.

Please by all means continue then, let's just see w=how this ends up.

You have two mods in this thread doing nothing but trolling. If you don't understand the topic that's your problem. You don't understand something and you imply someone else doesn't get it...?

Morrow seems to have missed the point too as all he did was dogpile on someone he disagrees with. This thread is not about collecting at all.

I have no need for this thread to continue personally. Peoples feelings seem to be getting hurt and its getting a little hot in here. I gathered enough information to answer my questions as well as could be. If you wish to delete this thread It makes no difference to me.

Um, yes there is. Did you not see rev respond asking him to stop? Also, benchmade does not make their knives by hand. Discussion only work if people actually want to have them and also if when people state facts they are correct.

Here is an email directly from Benchmade. Its words; not mine.

If you disagree, contact info is included.

Hi,
*
My Product Services team has said that the two knives come from a different batch of steel. One may have spent more time in the tumbler resulting in a different finish. As all Benchmade knives are handmade, its highly likely that there can be small differences from knife to knife but they should all stand up to our strict quality standards.

If there is anything more I can do for you, please feel free to contact me and have a great day!

Im still wondering though, what knives arent made by hand? Perhaps not the hands of the designer, of someone in the know, but hands nevertheless? Maybe, the hands of hundreds of little Chinese minors, but still hands all told what to do with some specs/instructions/orders. Some, with good hands, with some natural talent, will even make them better.

Thats a chinese assembly line for you. All said, it seems handmade parts would be more apt, yes? Has any knife maker finally reached a point where a knife is made through full automation?

You're kidding, right?

I have a truly handmade friction folder made by Hiroaki Ohta. The blade was forged and ground by hand, the handles were ground by hand, the pins and pivot were set by hand, etc.. Benchmade has their parts made by machines and then someone puts them together by hand.

By your definition, every knife is considered handmade.

That is a customer service rep. Means nothing. Do you even know what handmade means? Seriously, did you research this in the least?

Pay special attention to the part where the talk about manufacturing. Jeez....

He is not kidding. Some people need to read a lot more before they post. This thread being a prime example.

That's a good link, they actually talk about performance knives.

Also, perhaps they use handheld laser cutters.

"The Benchmade factory employs modern laser cutters and CNC machining centers that offer control and tolerances commonly found in the aerospace industry – often to tolerances half the width of a human hair. Our commitment to modern machining techniques and rigid quality control has allowed Benchmade to bridge the gap between custom and manufactured."

Yep, big difference between hand made and assembled by hand. If someone shipped me a box of knife parts and I screwed it all together, that's hand assembled. I didn't not make the knife by hand.

There's plenty of CNC machined knives being sold as handmade. What machines are allowed? Can one use electricity? Do you have to make your own tools? Smelt your own steel. It's a blurry line but some won't be satisfied unless they are lied to.

Not to split hairs here, but human hair thickness has a wide range. Regardless, I'm sure the machine tolerances of fine knives get a lot tighter than that. Since their customers are the type of people who often pride themselves on making their knives so sharp they can split and whittle hairs, I think BM should find a better analogy! :D :D

I know not really in the theme of this thread but i am going to stick with the specific example mentioned by wensynch which was his claim that benchmade handmakes their knives. A claim he backed up with an email from bm cs rep. I don't think a knife is considered hand made when the company refers to the making process as manufacturing all over their website literature.
