Pit Bull mauling and killing in California

True enough, a pack of dogs can be a dangerous thing. If the leader goes on the attack, the others will follow. Dogs in numbers know their strength over a single human.

I happen to like the breed. I also know they come with a heck of a responsibility. There is just no room for mistakes. I think owners of these breeds need to be real honest with themselves about owning a pit bull. Knuckle heads need not apply. You are responsible for the storage and use of your firearms, same applies to the bully breeds. Take care all and be safe!

Pitbulls need to be banned. This breed of dog as been bred for hostility and violence from the beginning. These vicious tendancies have been further brought out and bred for purposes of dog fighting and other illegal activities. Whenever you hear of dog attacks on people, the majority of them are pit bulls. I don't buy the argument that people make dogs this way. People can contribute, but the genetic makeup of these dogs is geared towards violence. Pit bulls are illegal in Miami Dade County and you have to have $300K in homeowners insurance to have one in the neighboring county.

Time to do away with these breed. They are worthless as a breed.

Better ban all these then as they have all been bred for fighting at one time or another!!!!!!:jerkit:

I have the lickest pit. She will lick you to death, pits get bad rep. Bad owners who think the breed is to raise their manhood level to badboy. I have seen maulings from breeds like dashhounds and ankle biters. As for defending yourself I back it 100%. But use judgement, before taking action. A dog's action my not be hostile, but playful. In the case above was clearly hostile, she had a right to defend herself, but the state took that away. States I would never live in...California,Taxachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and any other control your citizens and take your rights away state.

Southbeachlaw...banning a breed is not the answer, it is the coward's way of bringing order. Please come over to AZ and I will show a few owners who love the pit breed. If raised right these dogs are great family dogs. Any dog can maul, so how about banning all breeds...I know it is a dumb idea. Add Florida to my cannot live in state, well parts of it.

I can attest to living with one Pit Bull who was the lickiest dog ever, and then encountered her litter mate; totally different beast. Licked me one day, tried biting my foot the next(steel toes help).
They seem to be an...unpredictable breed in some ways. I think that only professional breeders should breed these dogs to avoid some of the aggression issues.
There's been more problems with Labs having aggression issues since people started backyard breeding too much to get their profits. I think the same thing happened with the Pits once they became extra popular.
I know of one person who intended to breed her dog; no friggin clue about breeding, just thought "oh, I'll just go find some male dog and it will all work out."
They can be wonderful dogs, but I think more care has to be taken in their breeding.
And jerks do raise jerk dogs; THAT'S been a big problem too.

Do you have any clue as to the way pitbulls really were bred back in the day. The WERE bred for hostility and violence towards other dogs, but also bred to LOVE HUMANS!!! These dogs needed to be GRABBED AND HANDLED MID FIGHT BY HUMANS. Any dog that turned on its handler during a fight was not bred and probably destroyed. I in no way condone dog fighting. If you think they were raised as human killers you're dead wrong. Please don't by in to the MEDIA BALONEY that it's mostly pitbulls, the media chooses to sensationalize the attacks by this breed. IT IS THE PEOPLE, THAT MAKE THE MAJORITY OF THE VICIOUS ONES, THIS WAY. Also don't think that politicians have a clue to the reality of the situation. They make the rules by whats popular with the media's and sheeple's sentiment at the current time. Banning is not the answer. Holding the irresponsible owners responsible is.

Besides, how many pit bull attacks were actually committed by pit bulls? How many people really know what a pit bull looks like? I wouldn't trust a reporter to know, not without an expert to tell him.

A Gun doesn't kill a person, it's the man who pulls the trigger !

The same is just as true with powerfull dogs !!!

I have no experience in pit bulls. But I wouldnt want them to attack my family members. Obviously, some pitbulls or most are very aggressive (on strangers). So, I think we should have a law that aggressive dogs must be leashed at all times. I might be wrong.

Good point esav, as my favorite Colt and Mossberg don't have surprisingly complex brains!!

Also, think of dog training as survival training. Some of the people here could live for a month in the bush with little more than was packed in a nalgene bottle. On the flip side, I know people that couldn't survive for more than a week without electricity and running water. Dog training takes years and years to understand and master. There are forums out there just like this where people are probably saying that so and so went crazy with a knife and asking if we should ban outdoor/tactical knives. It's just the same ol' different strokes, different folks thing going on.

Yes, dogs can be trained to do amazing things (working on my Golden and GSD to go get beer from the fridge and close the door), but they can also literally go crazy from boredom. Ever seen a dog that doesn't quite get enough mental stimulation? They do become a little more aggressive, kinda like bored soccer moms...

Honestly though, the most ruthlessly aggressive dog I have ever seen was a chihuaha. I won't allow my dogs around it because it will not stop attacking, short of kicking it to the next room!

(If people leave the door open, their pistols don't run outside and shoot someone.)

pistols don't have legs.

come on. don't be naive about it.....

they ARE dangerous dogs. so are rots, bull terriers, german sheppards, pinchers, and the list can go on for quite a while.

i really can't understand how people argue the fact of the matter. it makes no sense to me, but i'm no poli, so i guess it doesn't have to.

An irresponsible dog owner who lets his aggressive dog run loose is no different than an irresponsible gun owner randomly shooting his firearms without regard to anyone's safety.

YOU think I'M naive? Read what I wrote. Pistols aren't dangerous. Their owners may be. Dogs are inherently dangerous. They can go off and attack someone without their owner directing them to do it.

Some of you have wonderful imaginations. All I can think is, "anything we say can be misunderstood and used against us."

Coletrane, the question usually comes around to who's responsible for a dog's bad actions. The dog owner? The breed? Maybe mankind who was dumb enough to domesticate wild dogs/wolves so they had something to go catch the paper and harass an annoying cat?

Yes, dogs CAN be agressive, but it is the responsibility of the dog owner, just like a gun owner, to mitigate the danger of their selected companion.

And actually, more dangerous than a Pit on steroids with Barry Bonds fever is going to be me if my dog decides to bring me a budweiser!!!!

Good to see the "save the Pit" propoganda machine is still live and well.

From someone who has been bit by an obedience champ trained PB I can tell you first hand they are not right in the head.

Can you get lucky owning one? Sure. The breed is banned for good reason in many places. Even if ID error on the breed is 40% they are still many times more likely to be the breed that has attacked and killed somone or something.

Training only goes so far the rest is mother nature. Maybe you get lucky owning one, most are. Maybe you dont.

Its not the media its reality the breed is unsound, unstable and unpredictable as a whole. Combine this with their physical traits and you have the state we are in today. Poor owners are only part of the problem the breed is dangerous on its own without shoddy training or abuse.

Simply put the stats do not support this breed as a safe animal no matter their environment. Not even close not even debatable.

Skam

Typical Skammer, you got bit once so now your an expert on the breed. :barf:

By your logic labs and cockers have to go too, and don't forget german shepherds, I got 36 stitches due to a german shepherd so they all need to wiped from the face of the planet. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH
