Please help.

Hey, use that nostalgia :).

So, I use an Opinel #6 carbon to cut up apples at work. I EDC something else, but keep the opinel in my bag just for apple cutting at the office (its not scary looking at all) because it is so good at it. So if she eats lots of apples, I'd recommend at least one folding one that she can keep in her bag for that purpose. The #6 to me is just barely a 4 finger knife (meaning, its just barely large enough for my hand). For your mom, it would probably be perfect. And yeah, stainless will be much less frustrating for her.

I guess in your position, I'd grab a #6 stainless, a set of the 112's (stainless), and MAYBE a #9/10 as a "folding kitchen knife" to take camping/picnicking/etc, depending on if thats something you think your mom would like. The larger sizes are pretty big for most people, but they're large enough to get to the bottom of jars of peanut butter, cut sandwiches, etc. Just not sure if your mother would need something like that.

Anyway, good luck with everything, as it looks like you're doing all the right things :).
OK I'm getting a #6 and a #8 folding, and a #10 and #12 fixed/paring, the paring ones in stainless, the #6 in stainless and the #8 in carbon, and a spyderco sharpmaker. She hates the crappy IKEA knives she uses now, and the plastic knives she brings to work can't cut anything, so I'm hoping she likes the opinels. Again, she hates knives (not a knife gal), so I don't know if she'll edc, but she could probably keep one in her purse. My dad is up for it, and I have plenty of money saved up, so I'm going to order them. Is amazon a good site to get stuff like this, or should I go to a dedicated knife shop/site?

Knifecenter is a good place to check out, they're based on the east coast I believe.

First off, you are among the most articulate and sensible seeming teenage new members I've ever seen, especially among those with this sort of problem. Second, I don't think I have much advice or comment as I don't want to be disrespectful.

Your situation is one I'm glad I never had to face. Good luck.

EDIT: Apparently I'm fashionably late to this party. I would be respectful always, and after things have calmed down ask if a two handed traditional would be ok. They've been used for the things you mentioned for longer than Spyderco has existed.

Just making sure of something.

You're getting 5 knives?

  • #6 (stainless)
  • #8 (carbon?)
  • #10 (stainless?)
  • boxed set of two 112's

Just make sure they know you're ordering, and know why you're getting each one (is the 8 in carbon for you?). And be willing to cut back on the number if they don't feel ok with it (remember, these knives are on a diplomatic mission :)).

Also, I got my non knife sister a set of 112's after visiting her house and finding nothing that could actually cut an apple (quite literally), and she uses them all of the time. So I think your mom will like those.

And yeah, amazon works fine, but so do any number of other places (including the Bladeforums sponsored vendors).

:D.

Yep. My mom seems to like opinels now. I'm getting her one to use to prep her food at work during lunch

No, I'm getting four. A #6 in stainless, a #8 in carbon, and two of the paring knives in stainless.

(I don't know what the paring knives are called by opinel)

I'm also getting her a sharpmaker.

I am sorry to hear about your problem, but you are still living with your parents - recognize that they may be concerned about you having problems when you are still young. My father taught me to camp and to use knives when I was young, and I was in the Explorer Scouts in high school, so my situation was different.

Have you researched and printed out articles that show positive and safe use of knives? Scouting handbooks, outdoor magazines, Knife Rights and the ATKI sites all have information about how knives are useful in daily life. Bladeforums just today references an article in the New York Times concerning this topic.
Finally, is there an uncle or other respected family member (male or female) who can offer support?

Oh, and the #8 isn't for me. I'm getting both to see which size she likes better. Whichever she doesn't like I'll probably give to my grandfather. Or, (if my parents are okay with it), I may give it to my brother or just keep it for myself. My grandfather has a Buck 110, and that's all he uses, so anything else gets put away to rot. He swears by his 110, and just scoffs at anything else lol. He's a purist.

My problem was resolved (sort of). They let me keep the knife, but I can only use it when supervised, which I guess is a fair compromise. My mom seems to have a soft spot for opinels, though, as her grandfather had one, so I'm getting her a few. Maybe if she sees how useful they are, she'll warm up to knives and let me keep them full time.

Right On. Check the backpacking magazines, articles on home improvement and even Red Cross or FEMA sources that have checklists of useful tools to have around the house. If the grandfather is still around, you might discuss this with him.

So I stayed home sick today, and I was bored. As a surprise for my mom, I decided to sharpen all of the kitchen knives, because as I said, they're really dull. I live with my grandparents, my aunt, my parents, and 2 siblings. My aunt saw me sharpening the kitchen knives, and now thinks I'm some crazy murderer. She's giving my dad crap about it, and now we're back to square 1. They won't let me have the knife again, and my dad said not to get my mom the opinels. I was just trying to do something nice for my mom, and I got screwed for it. Ugh I just can't win :(

Have you considered running away to the Caribbean and becoming a pro coconut tree trimmer? You'll get to use huge knives all day and nobody will say you can't. You'll even get paid!

No but seriously
Just wait till things simmer down, then surprise your Mother with them new opinel's. :applause:
I'd imagine it's rough having this go back and forth.
Hopefully things will work out.

There is no age limit on knife purchasing in California state law. Not only have I checked the California penal code, but I've lived in California for 45 years now, and I legally purchased several knives in stores here as a minor.

As for the OP, you're 15 years old, and your mom is YOUR MOM, that means you aren't likely going to change her mind, or convince her that you are right and she is wrong, especially when the subject is knives and she thinks knives are weapons. Don't expect her to speak with you or listen to you as though you were her equal. Most parents (like myself) do not consider their children to be on an equal level. That's what it means to be a parent- we make an enforce OUR rules, whether our children think they are fair or not. I'm not saying to give up, maybe you can reason with her. Good luck with that.

The following is not meant as advice, but one of the most important lessons I learned as a child was how to keep secrets from my mom. Like every time my dad, or uncle, or grandfather let me do or have something cool and said "Now don't let your mother know". Such a skill (hiding things from my mom) also came in handy when it came to weapons and porn.

I consider myself fortunate that my mother didn't have a problem with me having knives (she and my father bought me a Buck 110 when I was 13), she only prohibited me from having knives that she thought looked like weapons (which defies reason, but that's the way moms are sometimes). Of course her prohibitions didn't stop me.

Look on the bright side Schakalicious, in less than three years you'll be 18. So get a good part time job, study hard in school, and save your money. That way, when/if you go to college, and/or save enough money, you can move out of her house and own and carry all the knives you want.

Sometimes it sucks to be a kid, but that's life. Being an adult sucks sometimes too :) .
I live in California too... im positive you must be 18....

Can you cite the statute number in the California penal code that says a person must be 18 years of age to purchase cutlery?

Here is a link to the official California state legislative website where all of California's state laws can be found http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes.xhtml . I've read every knife law in the California penal code several times, and five different lawyers have explained them to me. I've read some of California's knife laws so many times that I know them by heart. There is no statute in the California penal code that says a person must be 18 years of age to buy cutlery.

Of course individual businesses are free to make their own age limits, but that's quite different from a law.
