S30V vs M390 Toughness?

Now that the answer came straight from crucible ill call your response WRONG and anyone who cares to verify can call or email crucible. The manufacturer who made the steel has already spoken and your calling crucible liars lol ok crucible is wrong and your right get real....

That was the short answer......

Now if you want to actually learn something speak with Chris Reeve and see if he will tell you the whole story....

There was a video out there someplace were Chris Reeve went into detail about how S30V came about...

If he does tell you it will repeat a lot of what I posted in this thread..... And it was confirmed by a number of sources over the years.

A lot went into the R&D and what was the original steel was changed to what we know as S30V today.

How many counselors does it take to change a light bulb? Only one; but the light bulb has to want to change.

I know, try and give out some real information about one of the best all around knife steels in use today and look what happens......

It was a very complicated process with a number of people involved in it back then, and it took quite some time before it came about and CRK actually started using it in his knives.

And why it's still so widely used today.

In this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QiEnhA3n0A he talks about working with crucible to make s35vn after working with crucible to make s30v... I'd like to see the video where he states s30v wasnt developed for knife steel specifically but i doubt that exists considering crucible said it WAS specifically made for knives. What does it matter how many people worked on the steel? why wont you admit S30v WAS SPECIFICALLY made for knives? so just to be clear ankerson... S30v wasnt developed specifically for knives? is that what your saying? quit all the double talk and answer the question? CRUCIBLE said it was....Phil wilson said it was....... but ankerson says "well, not exactly"? whats up with that?

Well that's my feeble attempt to spread good will and cheer. Life is good! Enjoy your knives and cut something tasty this weekend. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

So uh, M390 beats out S30V in terms of toughness? What was the original question?

It was another older video, that I couldn't find again, maybe it was taken down or something...

Its close but i think m390 is a little tougher, at least thats what most of the people say... if i were you id shoot crucible an email to see there thoughts on this.. i mean it cant hurt lol they did make the steel after all..

Hey ankerson, I do respect your testing so let me apologize for the tone. I'll search for the video you speak of... ill even try and get a phone call in with chris if i can lol I do like learning but i try and get as much solid info from as close to the source as possible. If you have ever heard of the telephone game you know word of mouth is unreliable at best. No hard feelings I just like to get complete information. I wish you the best... if you do happen to come across the video shoot me an email or pm or something i'd like to see it.
Depends on geometry, HT, final hardness etc...

It can vary...

I have been looking for it for the past hour and can't find it.... :grumpy:

But Chris basically says that Crucible came to him and said they have this steel (Still in development) that they think might make a good steel for knives....

After more R&D with Chris Reeve, and the others what came about was S30V....

I have read that S30V was designed with knives in mind. Not that it was specifically formulated for knife use so that makes sense to me.

Yes, what ended up being S30V was developed/tweaked for use in knives thanks to Chris Reeve, Sal Glesser, Phil Wilson and some others.

That history is not debatable.

I doubt Crucible is going to recommend M390, for the same reason Bohler/Uddehom isn't going to recommend S30V or S35VN. I do think it's safe to say they're both very good steels, and currently M390 seems to be more popular among custom/handmade/semi-custom guys and their clients for knives that need to be durable as well as stain-resistant and hold an edge well. Other than that... it just depends.

So uh, M390 beats out S30V in terms of toughness? What was the original question?

The correct answers are, "Maybe", and "I've forgotten." ;)

I haven't found it either, I'm open minded and willing to learn so if you've got some stuff to teach me(I know you know a lot) I'm all ears but I like to see and research for myself so i can verify for myself. Too many people now a days don't do any thorough research on there own... anyway typed letters come off different than i intend so just letting you know I do respect you... hey No ones right all the time and every day i learn something new My granddad always said we can all always learn something from anyone and i agree with him.

Might be one of those ask Chris Reeve and let him tell you the story. :)

It's really a very interesting story about how S30V came to be.

I concur!

I just watched a few videos of his, man I did not know he was African and he named his knives after zulu words very cool. In the video with adam from equip2endure he looked mighty inconvenienced LOL

Sometimes in our quest for knowledge, it becomes easy to overlook the most basic and obvious things.
