Shame on you Jim Adams

I'm finding that concept a little hard to follow. As far as I can figure out, Delwin commissioned a custom knife from Adams, giving him a description, dimensions, telling him what materials to use, maybe giving him a drawing? Adams agreed to make the knife, accepted payment in advance ... then he discovered another knifemaker makes a knife like the one Delwin had commissioned? Are we all agreed those are the facts of what happened?

Then Adams responded to that discovery with outrage. He felt Delwin had abused his trust so badly it was appropriate to steal Delwin's money. Or maybe his idea all the time was to "borrow" Delwin's money without his consent, but it was only "borrowing" because he always intended to pay it back sometime, when he got dragged into court or TGB&U....

Is this design so unique that it belongs to the other knifemaker and it would be an abomination for any other maker to make something similar? Is it something innovative like Rob Simonich's Parasite or Sal Glesser's Spyderhole? Nothing has been posted about that, unless it was posted and edited out before I could see it....

Another option would be to contact the customer, tell him that he can not make an exact copy of the design, and propose a modified version of it.

I think there was some level of deception by both parties, but two wrongs don't make a right.

Many years ago, I was Deputy Sheriff. I discovered at that time, the truth was usually somewhere in the middle. That is my feeling of this situation.

If you chose to believe Delwin was on the up and up at the beginning of this mess, that sir is your perogative.

Delwin will get his money back, a knifemakers reputation is in the toilet, Delwin will go on his merry way. Such is life.

It is relatively easy for a customer, or a string of customers, to put a maker's reputation in the toilet. It amazes me that so many makers choose to then flush...

I've been in business (several businesses) since 1987. NEVER have I been close to something like this.
I learned very early on, No body can take your good reputation, only you can give it away.

The tragic mistake here on the part of Mr. Adams is when one Googles his business name which is his name - this thread appears on the same first page.
That is huge.

Mr Delwin I was wrong to keep your money, I am sorry for that.

I am also sorry I lied to you about the shipping.

I added the interest not because I felt guilty, I did it because it was the right thing to do.

Your payment is on it way. That Gentleman is all I can do.

At this point, there is nothing else to be said.
Good Night Gentleman

i think i can accept everything that has transpired except for the bolded red portion.

if you did not ship, never intended to ship, and in fact never intended to make the knife after your discovery, why lie to him?

i can only think your intention was to keep the money and force him to file some sort of claim on a nonexistent package.

No, I'm not choosing to believe anything, and I'm not relying on my feelings. I am looking for facts, which we still seem to be a bit short on.

I think all the facts needed are in the thread. The onus of responsibility is on the business owner and not the client. IF every time I relied on a client to tell me the truth or even the whole story to determine whether I conducted my business in a reputable manner - I would no longer be in business.
I have the reputation to protect, not the client.
The only piece I am missing is - has this been finally resolved and I do not mean verbal representations. I mean actual dissolution of the consideration (the $$ has been returned).
If I were the business owner I would issue a formal apology, provide proof of resolution and petition the forum administrator to have the thread erased (if that is even allowed) with the caveat that IF anything like this ever appears again it is grounds for permanent sanction.
That puts it behind everybody. All parties are made whole and this gets chalked up as an unfortunate happenstance.

No. Never.

Fair enough. That is for Forum Administration to adjudicate. Then I would still suggest to the Knife Maker - One final post wrapping this up once and for all once it has been finalized. Everybody is capable of a mistake or momentary lapse in judgement - we are only human.
I view a mistake as an opportunity to show exceptional character.
Takes a good man to admit a mistake - make it right - and move on.

This thread will forever be in Jim Adam's past. What he does today and in the future will be what folks will use to determine whether or not this maker's goods are worth buying.

If he starts doing the right things, and keeps doing the right things this will become merely bones in his closet. If he continues on the path he has taken with the OP then them bones will be dancing while waving a sign that says "Google my name"

Mr Jim Adam,
Can you please tell me how are you going to return my money and when. Please dont tell me its on the way. please give me a date.
Also from now on, please dont email me. Lets do it in here openly.

While we're being open, could you please explain why you commissioned a knife maker to unknowingly rip off another maker's design?

Jim isn't the only one who likes to edit.
Delwin just posted up a bunch of emails (post #133).
And then suddenly, upon a refresh, they were gone.

Delwin, I'd still like to see you answer my question.
I'm not defending Jim here, but I'd at least like to see you recognize that you were wrong here as well.
Ripping off someone else's design work is frowned upon in the knife community.

I am a chinese, this type of knife shape can be seen in most of our wet market. Did i say that i need him to copy other's design?? Why cant he as a maker advise me of something different??
Also i do even got to see the final product, then do you think i am happy with it?? So shall i need to claim that all the makers out there had to stick to their very own design and should not copy others?? Then why still there are makers making japanese knife?? Why there are so many makers still making bowie?? Please tell me. Or you can show me all the knife you have collected.

Sorry for the edit, i just want to post the mail of the picture of the knife Jim had sent me. But it is too long, and you can find it in one of the few pages.

there is a difference in making a style of knife versus asking a maker to copy the work of another.

not sure that is what happened, just trying to answer your question.
