Cry me a river Josh! How about an edge bevel that is ~3/16" wide for most of the blade length?
Thankfully I only did that ONCE on that knife, and it was done freehand so it didn't take my entire natural life.
Nice! Bet that took a while! Free hand or guided?
The LC took about an hour on the Edge Pro with Shapton glass stones: 320, 500, 1000, 4000, 6000. Id like the 8k and 16k.
Hey Curtis. Well the way I had it mounted already increased the angle at the tip slightly. I was limited in mounting options w/ the gen 3 vise, more so than the gen 2 (couldn't tilt as much, and limited gripping area) and I had it 'maxed out' as far as straight mounting in the vise. But to answer your question, yes I could have lessened the tip metal removal by using a different mounting option but I wanted this pretty close to 16 dps along the whole length of the edge. The tip is just ridiculously thick on this one so it just never would have cut as well otherwise, and now it can be fully maintained on the sharpmaker =)
Question for you guys: I was emailing with Ben Dale (owner/inventor of Edge Pro) and he told me the Shapton 8k I got from Chefknoivestogo.com (before talking with him) doesn't wear but also doesn't cut well, just fills up with filings & slurry, clogging it quickly AND it's really only equivalent to his 1K grit stone. He says his stones wear away properly, thus exposes new, fresh grit, thus will always cut well (better) because of that. Does this match the experiences you've had with the Shapton 8k? I got kind of bummed out & now feel like I need to get his 4k Edge Pro stone to get a stone that wears & cuts & refines correctly/better and will actually give me finer results than the Shapton 8K AND his 2K, 4K & 6K polishing tapes. Your thoughts?![]()
I got the EP kit Shapton 320, 500, 1000, 4000 and 6000 those stones put some nice edges on knives.
It feels reeeaaally scary (like surgical scalpel) sharp. No micro added. Try it. It took a while but I'm sure glad I did it.PS. I did use the EP small knife attachment to help with the low angle. To be honest, I'm curious to see how the S35VN will hold up on such a thin, acute angle with no micro bevel. But damn is this thing sharp.

Thanks Nfd538. Just ordered a Chosera 10K hoping that'll give me what I'm looking for. But I am liking the Shapton 8K I recently got. Just used it again (in progression) on my beater ZT 808. I wanted to try to put a mega bevel on it...so I took 12º on the EP for a test drive...

Nfd538, sweet edge! I haven't taken on M390 yet. But I'm feeling better about my Shapton Glass 8k now. I'm hoping the Chosera 10k is going to be even (a little) sweeter. I want to be done with the EP polishing tapes!
Josh, Thank you. You're an awesome resource. I appreciate the knowledge, data, pics & the link!
