The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Does anyone know what the 5.1 means on the 111? Was there a 5.0?

AFAIK Gen 5(.0) has been announced almost 2 years ago, it had a 3.5mm blade with a cut-through fuller and a bevel. It was produced in Bronze, Blue and Purple (CF + anodized spacer & clip).

5.1 is a current model specified on the maker's website. It's supposed to feature 3.2mm blade with Black CF scales and it is expected to weight up to 4.9oz. But it became even thinner in 2023, as it was confirmed by Tom (thanks to Gurwery).

Yes, your right and the 5.1 has the new non rotating pivot system

Gurwery Gurwery , unfortunately, my 5.1 (bought 3 month ago) definitely does not have any sign of Captive Pivot System -- I had it disassembled more than once and would have noticed. 🙃 It was a real nightmare to take apart after an incident when an excess of thread locker found its way into the gap between the blade and the pivot. It dried out and made a fixed blade out of my folder for a while :) I finally managed to dismount it, but the pivot head took some minor damage.

My first Shirogorov...

Congratulations! By the way, have you seen that the insert could be cut out of block in 2 ways for F95NL:

I'm enjoying seeing all the new Shiros and the enthusiasm of the current crop of Denizens (Mishka's maybe, eh B Bacchus ?) for their new knives along with discussions of of Gens and features, scales and colors.

Me? Still Mr Old School, carrying, using, and enjoying his 9 dated Shiros, though I guess my QUNL is actually a current model. I really don't want to move any along and how many more can I really buy?

Anyway, today I carried my little guy, the original NeOn Ultra Lite, which I guess would be Gen 1.1 with its open back construction and S30V blade. Shiro does such a great job with all their heat treats and this modest steel takes and keeps a remarkable edge. This knife came to me basically new from a one-day owner in 2018, and after a bit of tuning and getting all the grease out it's a free-dropper and foolproof flipper despite its rather light detent. It also has one of the best sculpted clips of all my various Russian and other knives having broken in very nicely.

It's also a very true namesake with its nicely wavy exterior milling.

ChazzyP ChazzyP , it’s been fun going back through all the previous pages of this thread reading up on the differences between model updates and seeing all of the pics posted. Thanks to everyone who has contributed!
It'll be seven years in September since I started this thread, and I find it amazing that we're approaching 5,000 posts and have had over a half-million views in that time. It's been a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to the next 5K and our first million hits. 🤩 Thanks to you and and all the Mishka's that've pitched in. 👏

HEADS-UP!

A workhorse Quantum Ursus Lefty is expected to drop today -- a proper nudist, fully stonewashed without satin or color accents.

Cromax PM / MRBS (but likely without steel washers) / 3.5mm / 118g -- unfortunately, no spacer, just 3 pins to protect the blade tip and your fingers.

I have never had a lefty knife, but since most frame locks are easy to operate with left hand, I am inclined to give it a chance.

May be they will finally make a righty version this year.

Who wouldn't keep it? The pattern is marvelous, congratulations!

BTW, excellent pictures.

Bright reflections make it hard to catch the fine details of the scales, but according to the video you snatched a nice one, congratulations! 🙃
They should definitely make a righty version, I can’t be the only one who likes the plain Jane Ti look

Nice little Saturday there!! I can’t wait for the production stellar. I hope it’s in m390, Shiro does such a great job on m390 I’ve been pushing my Hati very hard and it’s amazing.

Totally agree, I look forward to seeing the production specs as well.

BTW, are you satisfied with the factory edge on your Hati?

I have already taken my Hati Gen 3 RTC apart in order to reprofile the M390 blade thoroughly, enjoying both the process and the result so far. CPS really makes things easier. Hope 18 dps will be OK for my EDC tasks (mostly slicing).

Really impressed with factory edge and haven’t done anything but strop. Also impressive how far they can take down the primary grind before the edge starts. I’ve never sharpened a Shiro (im fairly new to the party) and am curious the best way to keep the factory edge line.

18 dips done well is a laser.

I maintain my HatiOn Zero on a Sharpmaker. It’s nominally set at 20 dps and keeps a good working edge. Especially with the brown rods. When I need to reprofile I’ll use my Wicked Edge.

I do hope that most of production Mishka's are going to get CPS and a ~3mm blade rather sooner than later.

Who knows, it could be the reason good enough for Mr. Old School to also consider trading some of his trustworthy Shiros for the newer ones?.. 😉

He does have one F95R with 3.5mm stock, so he is inching closer.... 😏

What is 3 mm equal to in inches?

The package finally arrived today. I doff my proverbial cap to R1 staff -- both the specs on the website and the data provided in the e-mail reply to Gurwery Gurwery were correct.

Unlike the measurements for the recent 111 batch on the maker's website -- the new pocket sword is almost identical to the one I already got. At least it has no visible flaws, so I am going to trade it ASAP.

On the other hand, la Tortuga Azul looks fine and feels good in my hand, the blade is even thinner than promised (close to 3.3mm) and it has a pronounced choil.

I'm inclined to keep it, at least until they make a Bronze/Brown or even better a fully stonewashed one.

P.S. well, I sold mine, but in case I feel a sudden urge to carry a blue turtle, my brother has a spare one.

Not the fanciest pic or in-depth review but my Stellar finally arrived today and it’s really phenomenal! The size really is in that perfect Goldilocks range. The handles are just a bit thicker than the Neon and F95 Turtle, which makes them feel a bit more F3-like if that makes sense. The colors are fantastic, mostly a dull, light bronzy/purply blue overall but the corners and milling pop with a lot more blue anodizing in the light and at certain angles (you only get a hint of that in my pic, sorry!). I also really like the milling along the edges of the handles, to me it’s reminiscent of the Bio pattern, and I love how they handled the intersection in the center. Action is of course amazing, it does have a bit of a strong detent, but I’m working that out. Cheers!
