Ok, back to knives....

My new-to-me Hati and my trusty favorite Turtle make for such a good pairing in both their similarities and differences. The 95T is so solid and substantial. It just flies out with an authoritative !thwack! and free-drops closed under its own weight on its glassy-slick SRBS. The Hati is no weak-sister, but it's incredibly light for its size at 4.25 oz. I spent some more time on her today, taking .01 mm off each washer and giving them a super polish on my green-loaded strop. The knife is unbelievably butter-smooth now--dare I say it, even more-so than any of my beloved CRKs. She flips open lightly and quietly and closes easily with a finger-flick.

She doesn't quite free-drop yet as I hate to take too much off a washer at a time, but I think I'll take another .01 off each again and she should close even more easily. I mentioned the Sebenza-like bushing pivot earlier and this time dis- and re-assembled the Hati like a similar CRK without taking the knife apart--just pull both ends of the pivot out, take the tension off the lock-bar, and slip blade, bushing, and washers out the front. Putting it back in reverse order is simple. I thought I might have a little trouble with only the single screw in the back holding it together, but I actually had to spread the front of the scales a tiny bit to get everything back in. The floating, but captured back-spacer and stop pins helped keep everything together. Much easier this way, and no chance of pinching a washer. Sweet.

And of course, some obligatory pics--

Well, you should hold out for what you want for sure, Slice. I know you've been looking for a while. I have two Shiros in CF--111 and Tabargan--my Python in Micarta, and of course the all-ti Turtle. The orange G10 just kinda spoke to me and I'm happy i got it. I'm digging the washers too, just to have something different in a frame-lock. My Tabargan is on washers and its action is just so amazingly free.

Hope you find what you're looking for, man.

That's a beauty, rexbo!! Did you get that here through Vladimir_k? I was sorely tempted at his listing, but stopped short as I didn't think I could make myself put it in my pocket. I've been trying to buy knives that I'll actually carry instead of just collect and fondle. Do you plan to use/actually cut stuff with the gorgeous Dr D ?

Thanks ChazzyP! No, I didn't get it through Vlad... The good folks at Recon 1 snagged on for me :) At most this one will only see light use at most, I have too many lessor knives to hard use my Russian beauties :) haha

That's a beauty Rexbo congrats. That is a game changer in a collection!!!

I agree, and that's the scary part! haha I tend to judge knives by other knives, so having said that the Dr Death is putting a major "hurt" on how other are viewed. haha

Good to see another cf RDD Rexbo :)
It's really one of those knives where I enjoy seeing all the fine detailing on...

That Dr Death is beautiful. A real assassin. I'll have to stop reading this thread if you're going to wave this much tempation at me.

I wonder what a Dr Zhivago would look like. :D

Now you know how I feel, EB. Having resisted several times already, I don't know how much longer I can hold out on spending waaaay too much on a knife I'll never be able to make myself use.

Actually, this thread is just an elaborate ruse to empty your coffers--we mis-behave, you show up to mod/correct us, and end up destitute. Dr Zhivago is what a knife owner looks like after buying a Dr Death--the assassin of bank accounts. :p

A show of tool! Love the hedgehog. Certainly need to get myself one...
Since we talk tools.. let's have a show of deadly rare Workshop bits tonight... to match the captivating Zhivago that seems to appeal to many here... ;)

Here is something i came up with after making a mistake. On my first Shiro was curious about the internals plus wanted to increase the detent so took the knife apart but my luck i got a overzealous Shiro worker that put a TON of loctite. It was impossible to unscrew the pivot screw. Put it under hair dryer, boiling water and used latex gloves to hold the flat end of opposite pivot. Well after a ton of elbow grease and force it loosened up but the catch was that unwillingly screwed the pivot screw a bit because was using a flat end screwdriver which is a harneded tool steel so harder than titanium and easily to scratch. Well after a few weeks i decided to make my own pivot tool. U wont believe how much it costs and how effective it is.

Here it is a simple home depot/lowes galvanized or similar (nonrusting preferably) washer. Just have to make sure its thick enough to fit perfectly in the pivot screw. The thickness of the washer i dont remember but just know it needs to be thick enough to fit perfectly on the pivot screw. The barrel spacer screw is slightly thinner so that end of the tool requires a little sanding to make it fit. Well see pics

By the way the washer is softer than the titanium to decrease the scratch potential but it still remains steong enough not to bend.

Pictures shows it fitting in both screws

Thin-Slice, congrats on the Hati. I was looking at it when it first popped on the exchange tonight. I mulled & mulled then got distracted away by my kids. Glad it went to good hands! Also, very creative solution, the washer/pivot tool. Speaking of mirror polishing washers, I just did last night to a Benchmade Crooked River I just got a few days ago. Wow is that a tricky knife to resemble correctly. I was on the verge of panic a couple of times thinking I'd never get it all back together properly. It's the second time I've been through this with a Crooked River. Did the same with another one I sold...and missed. So I got another and dove into the pits of Hell, all just to mirror polish the washers. Thankfully all worked out well and man is it a smooth free-dropper now! See, you just saying "mirror polished washer" brought out all the residual tension I was harboring since the takedown & reassembly last night. Thank you. I feel a little better now.:) And again, congrats on that beautiful CF Hati!
