The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Good stuff. We should come up with a name for those marks on Shiros. Choil Cancer? Ricasso Rash? Plunge Plague? :)

All my knives are use for EDC if I like 'em at all, so I can live with the marks. Here's what frequent, haphazard Wicked Edge use will do over four-five years on a Mnandi.

A fella gets used to it. I'll report back in a couple years and show what it looks like on a Shiro.

I am attempting to cancel my order for the WorkSharp Professional Precision Adjust. I have something to put under the knife holder to keep it from dipping when pressing the stones down, and the basic one is doing such a good job so far. So, I 'm not going to spend the extra right now if I don't need to.

Wasn't able to cancel, as apparently it was processing immediately, and it's being delivered next day from Amazon. I'll take that as a sign that I need it 😂

While I don't have experience with the Pro Precision Adjust, I've heard time and time again that it is a huge upgrade over the original version. I was able to get great edges with my standard precision adjust, but after stepping up to TsProf I never looked back. The added stability combined with the larger stones makes for a much better experience. I think that's probably the biggest benefit you'll see with the pro...a 6" x 1" abrasive removes material way faster than the 4" x .5" on the original. It makes those reprofiling jobs much less daunting.

It arrived this AM in less than 12 hours! I'll try it out the next time I need to sharpen a knife. I have a JE Made barlow that needs some love...

Did you ever put a picture together of your Shiros? If it's convenient, I'd be interested to see 'em one of these days.

Someday, maybe. So far I've posted all of my water, earth, fire, air "elements set" together; andI posted all my boxes together, afterI had to get to some Herman knives behind them in the safe.

Interesting discover today with an F3 and Wicked Edge. Here's a formula that will get the entire blade with no chance of ricasso rash (the plastic part of the stones ride on the Micarta...giving you a stop before the stone hits the plunge grind).

Top alignment holes, 50 mm from clamp to tip, 23 DPS on scales (21+ DPS actual).

As you can see, I need to adjust it a smidge next time. It would be nice to get a little more contact with the choil-most part of the blade.

Anyhoo, thought some might find it interesting.

The F3 is like a curvy woman - feels great in the hand!
Agreed. I think the pocket clip is a bit much though. Yesterday I took it off and now it feels great in the hand. Think it’s gonna be a belt sheath knife.

I can’t wait until the next batch of F3NSs come out.

They did an outdoor version f3 with no clip and came with a really nice belt sheath last year ish. Bet you could find one second hand

I’ve been looking for an F3 outdoor mainly for the included sheath. Doesn’t seem to be possible to buy the sheath/pouch on it’s own.

What's the deal with Elmax vs M390 (specifically in Shiros and their heat treat)? It may be my imagination, but it seems that the Elmax gets much sharper then the M390...but dulls a bit faster. Elmax seems to be much easier to strop too, which makes sense if it's a little softer.

But, I don't really know if it's softer. Some Googling indicated that Elmax is similar to S30V. Same Googling also indicates that Elmax & M390 are "more-or-less the same".

What do the Shiro people say?

My understanding is Elmax has less edge retention but more toughness than M390, but still better edge retention than 154CM which is also a tough and easy to sharpen steel. M390 has great edge retention and corrosion resistance, but not very tough. That in my eyes makes Elmax closer to S30V than M390, but with better edge retention than S30V if hardened to 61-62 RC.

Thanks for the input fellas. I took the Elmax to 1000g diamonds and then a bit of ceramics to remove the burr. It is wicked sharp. I had taken the M390 to 600g diamonds and leather honed. So, maybe I didn't get the 390 really sharp. I'll start dealing with both of them exactly the same and go from there.

You beat me by like 2 minutes this AM... I went to check the balance in my slush fund and came back and gone.
Lol. I didn't even read the feature list. Bought it on pure faith. Seems like it's a three-bear flavor.

There was an issue with shipping options and R1 called after to sort it out. They told me that there was only one in the shipment. I guess that's sorta cool. I wonder if it was made from extra parts leftover from the R1 Invitational January raffle. It looks very similar, but with different inlays and different polishes.
