The "Whatever" Thread

Per John's request....hi everybody! :D

Got a fly fishing tournament saturday. my oldest boy decided he wants to check it out too. looking forward to it.

I used to love fly fishing! I had a great uncle (my mom's uncle), who was an avid fly fisherman. One year for Christmas when I was about 10 and my brother was 14, he gave us his old fly tying gear and taught us how to tie flies. We could not figure out why he gave us that until he told us about the rest of our present. Two weeks with him and my great aunt at a cabin on Long Lake in Wisconsin. My Mom and Dad came up for the second week to join us.

I can't fly fish to save my life. My dad never taught me, though he is good at it. In Iraq I would stand by my boss butt ass naked while he would tie flies. He'd eventually look over and yell at me. Good times. haha

I love fly fishing but none this week, throwing jigs from the pier every morning then bait in the surf later in the day. I only get 1 or 2 weeks of saltwater fishing a year so I make the most of it. I'll be worn out from vacation and ready to start planning the next trip as soon as I get home.

That's awesome! I've never been salt water fishing, but I'd love to. My uncle is at Virginia Beach on his honeymoon and fishing. Caught a ray a couple of days ago.

I'm not much at bass fishing and what not, really the only fishing I've ever been taught to do is deep lake fishing on Lake Ontario. I try to river fish and what not, but I'm not overly successful.

Cool story and an even better memory, i'm sure.

I grew up on the northshore of Mass, and striper fishing is still my favorite. in fact, we have a fairly renowned flats area on Plum Island (Joppa Flats) that was one of the reasons i learned how to fly fish. i still have not been!

Got a package from KYenglish today. WOW! Quick cell phone pic doesn't do it justice. I'll try to get (and post) some better pics this weekend. Thank you

I am guilty of not posting here too much, but then again, I don't post a lot anywhere lately. Between work and catching up on stuff around the house, about all I've had time to do is read threads.

We had a bad winter, and are just getting in the swing of things, it went right from winter to summer, pretty much no spring. My son is out of college for the summer, so I got him a job pulling cable at our company. It's a steady 40hr work week, he's probably not too pleased about that, but he'll make some decent dough this summer compared to last year working 20-someodd hours a week at McDonalds.

I haven't been freshwater fishing in a handful of years, don't really have anyone that wants to go with me. I sometimes get a deep sea trip once during the year, so that satisfies the itch a little.

I've got some mod projects on the bench...I got behind during the winter, and have caught up quite a bit, but still have a few projects strung out more than I wanted. I've been planning a custom pocketknife project for a while, but just haven't started it yet. Customers come first, ya know...

Kind of an ignorant question, but what should I put on my wooden handle knives to protect them?

Im not worried about the steel so much, but I do want to protect my wood as long as I can.

Any one else remember when this forum used to be active? Kind of feel like I'm wasting my time taking pictures and posting. It can't be because everyone is out enjoying the nice weather because the weather sucks !

I am guilty of not posting much right now, but I still read a lot. We're getting ready for a farm sale, so between that and trying to keep up with all of the mowing and related shtuff, I don't have much time to spend posting on the forums right now. Also I should mention that I've been doing quite a bit of motorcycle research in my presently limited idle time.:D

Hey Peter....get ready, Johns going to grind me out a SQUIRREL HUNTER Blade! we need some hickory and some walnut Me thinks

Linseed oil's an old stand-by, i've also tried god wood varnish and coating the ahndle in a godo quality clear expoxy or glue but that take s lot fo work to sand downa nd smooth out. there are otehr speople prefer these days, anmazson serarchs for linsee doil bring them up in suggestsions, but I'd stick with linseed oil and just reapplys evral coast every so often (couple of months) it's cheap, cheerful, tarditional and low cost. I'm still using the same $5-8 tube I bought from walmart when I started making wood handles and i've I used it a lot.

Thanks for the info.

These JK \ HK knives are the first wood handled knives ive ever owned.

Im fresh and new to this blade business.

A tad embarrassing, but by pure dumb luck I hit the bullseye on my first shot out ! ;)

Edit: and that knife above totally looks like an alligators head, and the K is his eyes!
It is certainly on my wish list.
