The Zero Tolerance 0777 has arrived!

So far I've noticed and heard of five subtle changes to the 0777:

1. The stainless steel hardened lockbar insert is different, its not simply rectangular in shape.

We changed this so that the detent ball would remain stationary. We had a solution to cope with it moving, but this makes more sense.

2. There is no swedge grind, unless I just can't see it in the pics.

The swedge grind only existed in the original Photoshop rendering. It was never even done on the Prototypes. unfortunately, a number of dealers used the old rendering for their stock image, so people assumed it would be there.

3. The pocket clip, going from machined like the lockbar to a little flatter with zt-0777 on it.

This was the only genuine concession we had to make for production. The original clip had a U-shaped portion at the back that allowed it to flex nicely. When we removed that portion, the clip was too stiff. The flat version is not quite as cool, but it is functionally superior.

4. On the proto, the blade tang and the part of the blade the kvt bearings ride on was damascus, now its the Vanax 35.

The original prototypes had a slight gritty feel to the action because the ball bearings were riding on the etched damascus surface. We changed the composite blade so that the bearings would ride on smooth, hardened Vanax 35 - as a result, the action is nice and smooth. The change is only visible if you remove the blade.

5. The stop pin is now more visible than the proto.(thanks espnazi for the clarification)

The handle is quite thin where the stop pin hole is located. Drilling through the handle and using a stop pin with longer bosses makes it stronger. The stop pin is black, and it disappears surprisingly well when you hold the knife in your hand.

Hopefully I didn't miss anything.

Please see my responses in BLUE.... :)

Thanks for the clarification Jimmer, you guys have really outdone yourselves with this one, makes for a hell of a burger slicer ;)

Thanks for that Jim. Really clears that up for me. I was trying to be helpful but perhaps I only added to the confusion.:foot:

But what does KAI have to do with the crazy secondary prices?

We have NOTHING to do with any high prices in the secondary market. We did not change our wholesale pricing to dealers. This happens every time we release a hotly anticipated product, and it should be seen as no surprise that some people have chosen to do this. Remember, a product is worth whatever the market will bear - and this can vary quite a bit over time. I can think of a number of much simpler production knives that have gone for these kind of prices in the secondary market and held them for years.

We probably should have charged more for it. These super complex projects are rarely financially lucrative for us. This project has been particularly difficult and expensive.

Not at all - it actually made it easier for me to describe the changes that have made. They are actually quite minor.

They may be minor, but that is what really makes this piece so special. That's why I'm patiently waiting for mine turn to come up on receiving one.

Have you guys ever considered taking applications for your ultra high-end limited production knives, a la Ferrari? Current customers with the longest purchase history and/or the largest collection get first dibs ensuring that only the real fans get one instead of flippers looking to triple their investment in a week. The process may seem elitist, but watching the 0777's go for $250-$400 over the original sale price is driving me crazy, especially when you can tell it is being sold by someone who never really wanted the knife in the first place. The worst part is that people continue to buy them, meaning future sellers have no incentive to sell for a reasonable price. :(

I know you guys don't have anything to do with secondary prices, I was just wondering why that guy thought you did. Again, hell of a knife, the trick is going to be keeping my wife from stealing it from me :p

Excellent idea! However if one of my manufactures bypassed my dealership I would flip shit. I really really REALLY like your idea though!

The Ferrari system definitely causes some frustration. My uncle has had 13 in his lifetime, currently owns 2, and still had his application for an Enzo rejected.

I also like the idea of a "collector club", spyderco style. I wouldn't mind committing to buy every knife ZT releases if I knew I could avoid headaches like these. New models are almost always an easy sell if you don't like them, especially if you don't price gauge.

Wow lots a lot of Ferraris!

You mentioned committing to buying every new release. Is that how a collectors club works? Do you get to buy at wholesale or MSRP?

I have never actually joined, because I am not a Spyderco nut and they make an insane amount of knives, but here is the info on theirs:

If it is full blown MSRP count me out for any company, but if it is street price or lower I would be all over it for ZT. :D

I've read most of the recent 0777 threads and haven't seen anything about the release strategy. Are only a few being released now with the rest coming out later this year or are all 1000 being released over the next week or two? I was a little late on the pre-order so I'm not sure whether or not I'll get one - I'm just wondering how long I need to wait until I know for sure.

You made changes to the prototype!? Well now the knife is not what I wanted and I must sell mine!! :p

Thanks for the updates jimmer. I was checking on the release, patiently, when I saw that it was already out. Soon after that I got my notice that mine would be shipping soon.

Funny how that works out sometimes.

I'm in the same boat, I'd love to hear from someone who has information as to how the release is being handled. Happy either way with it being out but haven't heard anything in regard to the timeline for all of them being out. Thanks in advance!
