Wanna Help Design The Busse "Woodcraft" Knife????

Like a BA-III, but no choil and thinner (1/8"). Maybe drop the point a little more. Those are the only points stopping it being my main bushy knife. Full hieght flat or convex grind. I would convex the edge myself anyway.

Alternatively, my favourite bushy knife is my NWA forum knife. Plenty of pics on the survival forum. If it were made from infi it would be absolutely perfect...

nessmuk concept.jpg

A slightly downswept, 4", flat ground, satin blade with plenty of belly. The talon hole is contained within the handle scales. No exposed tang or extra lanyard hole.

To call it a Nessmuk:

- "hump" over the belly
- upswept blade

To keep it Busse:

- INFI, 3/16" (plenty thin)
- full flat grind
- guard w/ talon hole
- pommel
- contoured handle
- fills the hand!

PM sent, Jerry. ;)

DK and Jerry working together on this would be a dream come true for me!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I like MoonWilson's tiny sketch the best so far. I know I could get flamed for using "foul" language like this but I think the current howling rat has a near perfect blade design and profile. I would just like to see a slightly wider and taller handle with no choil and a minimal guard. Pure nessmuk designs have too much belly for a lot of "survival" wood forming tasks. GREAT for skinning no doubt, but not ideal for bushcraft all around IMO. If you want that much skinning ability get a PBS :p

AND full convex, satin finish would be SWEET!

One of my favorite, "go-anywhere" blades is this lil bit o'cheese. A bit of modification in the blade shape for a Nessmuk style but the grip is perfect. Please, please, please use the "mini-mag" contoured grips of this one again! A spine thickness of 0.1552" and double cut. :D

For a nessie style, I suppose you could lose the choil (though I like it on this blade A LOT) and even lose a bit of blade length with the edge gained from the lack of choil.

(No, this pic isn't mine. Mine is much more well used than this one! :D)

Why not a HRLM with no choil in INFI? Busse already makes them anyway.

The Meaner Street looks like it would work. Hope to find out soon. Ship it to me, Amy!

Horn Dog, I am SOOOO glad you posted here and your timing is PERFECT! I was just admiring your modded HRLM over on Rat Chat. I love it. For this potential offering I would still opt for no choil but a handle design that would allow for a hold very close to the edge. It's about time for something like this I think (in INFI). I love the treatment on your thumb ramp too. That's perfect  The thumb ramp being further out is going to provide more leverage and a more comfortable grip.

From my brief experience handling the HRLM I do think a slightly taller and thicker handle would be a nice addition and would distinguish it further from the current howler.

4&1/2" drop or spear point blade with full flat grind.
Stock 1/8" to 3/16" thick.
Relatively wide blade with full flat grind from edge to spine.
No choil.
A guard, if any should allow the hand to be as close to the blade as possible.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Handle of micarta or G10 given Busse's full ergonomic and textured treatment.
Busse hollow rivets.
Tang should be skeletonized for weight reduction.
Tang to protrude slightly at rear of handle for pounding.
My 2 cents

As nice as Tony's knife is, I would rather have the shape of an SHBA just thinner or an oversized Game warden with just more edge, that would be more suitable.

I only held Ducci's SHBA for a few minutes and I was working from what I thought was the best Busse for this kind of knife, the CPDABA. From looking at some SHBA photos I'd say yes the SHBA would work just fine if the blade wasn't so tall from edge to spine.

To me the large Warden would be a very distant third choice.

Removable scale fastener option please.

I'd like to be able to carve up several sets of handles for it and be able to easily switch them on and off....:)

I'd take one of these in a heartbeat!!!

I liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike it!!!!!
Well by the time I got home I realized that Jerry asked about a Woodcraft Blade and what I want isn’t that but rather what I think is a good backpack camp knife. So I’m going with what I want since I bug Skunk most!

The best way for me to explain what I want is to go from the CPDABA I have and say why I’d change things.

CPDABA - For me this is very close but… the knife needs to lose about 1 inch in overall length. It is just a little too big for me to control the tip of the knife as well as I’d like. ¼ inch can come out of the choil and ¼ from the pommel by just grinding it down. I like the look of a choil but really…. they don’t cut things. So if you can’t get your finger in it then it may as well be very very small. Maybe lose another ¼ from the blade and ¼ from the handle. If it was just me I’d lose more in the handle but some guys may have very large hands and need more there. OK one inch gone.

I’d want some pommel exposed… like 1/8 inch to use to strike a fire steel so I don’t have to use any part of the blade. Also the pommel needs to have a nice flat profile so there isn’t anything sticking you in the hand if you want to push the knife into something real hard with your palm.

The current blade is also a bit too tall, mine is 1.32 from edge to spine and that needs to come down to .95 to 1.1. The reason is that when I camp I bring treats in small containers or on short day hikes or one night out trips even little jars. A tall blade is cumbersome or just won’t fit in the containers; also I find that a tall blade gets in my way cleaning smaller fish.

As to thickness 3/16 is plenty thin.

The BA-III’s handle/slab shape is perfect I can’t think of any way it could be better.

As to blade shape I’d like to see the point dropped a little more without getting as acute of a point as the AD blade shape. To those that say a larger AD blade shape would work, I'd say yes but with a less acute point.

As to grind full convex would be cool and if not then full flat.

I don't like coatings but I can always strip it.

You could call it the “Camp Four” after the camp site in Yosemite Valley where Big Wall rock climbing was birthed in the USA (if not the world).

So here is the "Camp 4" and why tax people should never use photoshop.:p

Thanks for the kind words, Dunner. I already liked the HRLM. I just did those little things to it to make it work better for me. I am not a knife maker, but I have gotten better and more patient as a grinder/modifier since I retired last year. The modified HRLM is a real slicer.

Horn Dog, how do you like the yard keeper. That is IMO the perfect 4 inch blade. Just as much blade as handle. It will be a classic one day.

Ditto. Can't wait to see what comes out of Jerry's imagination.
