Week-end Post, What Are You Doing

Well it Friday Aug 3 and this weekend I will be working on more wood for the winter. Be also clearing up the shop as well. What about you?

Well, yesterday I cleaned my shop, cut some 1/2" inconel to make 2 plates 3"x4". I am going to drill the corners for 1/2" ss bolts and use it as a ficture to make makome, Inconel is a chrome/nickel alloy that is extremely red hard and should survive forever at 2000f. It also sawed slower than slow. I wonder how it is going to drill. I also worked on my brass cannon a bit and should be able to finish the cannon itself today. Then need to start on the carraige. I also Plan to start a couple blades and work on another small folder like the one I finished last weekend.

I got the tumbler going, maybe it will take another 24 hours. cleaned up a few blades got back from HT, started handle shaping for one of em. Ipe burns so fast when you use power tools to remove material. Tomorrow more handle work, clean up a couple fillet blades, more handle work. Oh yea and continued load development for my 7mm and my wife's 243. ...I wish Jeffe would get his 500 AR up and running so I can snag the reamer. I have a VZ24 with no home...

It Friday Aug. 10, 2007 and I will be working out in back of the home. Power washing the wood, its 18X34 big job to do. Sat will be out in the shop working on a knife. Sunday I do not know whats on the do list from the wife. But I know it will be something I do not want to do. How about all of you maker's.

The "honey do" list never ends! I'll be installing a door on the back porch and hanging a ceiling fan in a recently finished room. Probably taking the fam to the pool on Sunday. I might get back to my knife project next friday, as I only get about 2 hours a week in the shop, if I'm lucky...good thing it's only a hobby at this point! :D Have a great weekend guys! -Matt-

By the way Barkes...don't the neighbors get offended when you "power wash the wood" outside? ;)

Well, another weekend is here. Got leather, but no leather working tools. Hopefully on monday. Shooting at noon, birthday dinner for future bro in law, more handle finishing and shaping. Working on the wifes letter opener. Sunday, more shooting, more skinner finishing. Maybe roll some 243 ammo for accuracy after I shoot the pressure loads.

Had a productive Sataturday & Sunday.

Saturday morning I got up around 5 AM, coffee, etc. Later (after I woke up) I Re-arraigned my garage for hot work. I reheat treated a blade I did last week that warped more than I wanted it too. It's still warped but away from the blade so I'll straighten that full tang out with an oxy/fuel torch. Than I started forging blades, I would forge 3 blades by the end of the day. Kook came over around 11 AM and I moved another anvil out so he could do some forging. At about 2 PM we had finished normalizing and annealing the last blade.

Here are pics of the 4 blades, the top one is made from cable, that was forged at IG's, the second and third from the top are forged from a piece of 1" X1/4" which I picked up from IG last Friday. The bottom one was forged by Kook, also of 1084 of the same size.

This morning I profiled the 3 that I had made on Saturday.

I typically use an angle grinder, dremal tool and belt grinder for the profile, and I will remove the forge scale with the angle grinder. Here is my angle grinder work station (portable:D)

Today I also had to mow the lawn and put the forging stuff back where it belongs before Linda comes home. Linda and Marleen, (Kook's wife) went to a concert in Freeport Maine yesterday.

That about covers it, except those hours after 2 pm on Saturday after the annealing was taken care of. Well I locked up the garage, and Kook and I went to my Brothers bar for a few cold ones

Saturday...
Read the paper and had coffee to start the day. Then trimmed all the bushes and hedges in the yard. Weeded the gardens, plus mowed and trimmed. Took 5 hours to get this all done. The wife helped. We also got the house cleaned up nice. All the laundry is done. A long hot day. I was too tired to get into the shop.

Sunday (today)...
Going to clean up the shop. After it's cleaned I'll be able to begin slotting, cutting, shaping and fitting up a guard for a damascus drop point hunter I'm working on. The guard is going to be made of nine pieces of various materials, including nickel silver, ebony and red and white spacers.

Anybody else having a productive weekend?

One word can describe my weekend.....Fishing. Not ready to start focusing on knife making until after my land is sold and after moms house is sold. I basically spend about 3-5 days here at my house and then spend about the same amount at moms house. I still need to remember to get IG his $7 for my WI. If anyone wants to go fishing here at the Medina Lake I have a john boat and a trolling motor. Just bring your tackle and an ice chest and we will fill it up with drinks. Last night I set out 4 jug lines and this morning I only found 3 of them. The one I'm missing I know had a crack in the jug so i think a fish grabbed on and filled the jug with water. so right now I'm waiting on the expanding foam to finish curing inside the jugs. Filling them with foam so that if they leak or something they wont sink.

Aug. 17, 2007 and I will be working on some more firewood this week-end. Heat Treating Two more knives for a order. Sunday going down south to a friends home. How about all of you knife Buddy? ----

Working on moms house and my lot. Do a little bow fishing. Hopefully get me one of those huge gar I keep seeing. Would love to get a cat or a carp.

My last 2 weekends have been 4 days long and working on a jobsite up north east of oroville (lower sierra) where we are building a strawbale house on a REALLY unimproved lot. We're all getting lots of practice trying out new camping gear and honing our tracking skills. No phone, water, electric...no buildings, either.

Not leaving a lot of time to finish knife projects!

I did still manage to put the final touches on the bird and trout and a mini skinner (that I can't seem to make a proper sheath for) which I can sell now.

The bird and trout and sierra hiker using shadetree phenolics samples won't be done for another week, at this rate.

But, damn, it's a fun job.

I am gonna get a sheath finished tonight, just dipped it in melted parrafin and mink oil. Tomorrow finish the handle for a skinner for said sheath, hit a fillet blade some more with the 2000 grit. Work on sheath for fillet knife. Mount scope on Aunt's new 10/22, boresight, and re boresight Uncle's mini 14. Go to range, shoot for a while. Go to spearfishing weigh in Sat night. Sunday, more hand sanding, maybe mount sweet Walnut burl handles and start shaping. Oh yea, maybe work on that paring knife with Shady's laminates.

I spent yesterday doing chores around the house and yard. We went to a party last night at a friends house. Good food, good drink, great friends.

Today I'm going to clean the shop and do some reorganizing.

My 5 month old granddaughter died. I'll be attending her funeral. She had several birth defects but her cause of death is a mystery. The ME was headed out on vacation, so he said no autopsy was necessary. My daughter is really devastated, as is my son in law.

Heck of a way to spend a weekend.

I fly out to Iowa (Idiots Out Wandering Around) tomorrow (Wednesday). My step daughter is getting married Saturday! On Sunday, I fly from Iowa to Nashville for my company annual National Sales meeting. I'll be there through Thursday morning, getting home late Thursday night. Lot's of frequent flyer miles the next 9 days!

The KMG Wil Hurley is selling me should arrive on the day I get home. It'll be like Christmas.
