Week-end Post, What Are You Doing

Hey IG!! I have seen you mention "Portagee" foods in your posts.

What is the difference between "Portagee" and "Melungeon" (?)!!

I have seen very few instances of the word "portagee" and even fewer of the word "Melungeon." The two terms come up often in my stange searches about all things unusual. I guess that I don't have any better to do a lot of times...:D

Elvis was supposedly a Melungeon (but was he Portagee??). Strange stuff to the casual observer, but I'd like to know what you ring up!!

Thanks,

No slight intended.:D:D

Portagee is what we call are selfs up here in New Bedford, MA., because we have a large Portuguese community. We have the largest fishing port on the east coast here, so allot of the Portagee fishermen settled here. We were the largest Whale hunting port back in the 1800's too.:D

From Portugese to Portagee makes perfect sense. The Melungeon name comes from a group of people who came to the US from the Mediterranean part of the world (and possibly north Africa). Some people who consider themselves Melungeon use the word "Portagee" and "Melungeon" like the term was interchangeable. I was just wondering if you had heard of any of this.

well, today was spent under a hammer. Went off on a "spare hands" job with a friend who is a blacksmith, did a bunch of cold work on a 75 pound power hammer for some railings. A LOT of cold work. Gonna be sore.

Picked up some really thick bandsaw, couple lawnmower blades, a chunk of bronze, and some a6 chisel blanks.

Well last night me and a few buddies went bowfishing for gator gar. It sucked and is a little early in the year.

April 27, 2008

Going to put on some T-Bones today before the rain comes in later to night. I will be using the grill part of the smoker. On the 29th will have about 10 worker on the roof. The week looks good for doing the job. Shop cleaning today and yard work. How's things looking like for you all on this week-end. -------:)

I am taking this weekend off. Just going to hang around and drink beers. On Sunday cooking up some Prime Ribs for Helen and me.:D;)

fighting with manzanita handle scales. Trying to decide between a propane and a coal setup (I already have a charcoal forge) for my second forge...

I have a local friend who is willing to set me up with his old coal forge at about $165- and I have access to several hundred pounds of coke for FREE- downside is it's all in just over fist sized chunks and I have to break it.

Or I can get a propane 2 burner, $100 more but .... well, it's propane.

Going to finish up MY EDC... tired of sending knives to other people and not having my own ;)

Hopefully doing getting my fiance's tanto ready for heat treat. If the weather permits I'm going forge out my groomsman's gifts. I'm making a chef's set consiting of 9" chef, 6" boning and a 3" paring/utility set for my brother and best friend. They're chefs and these will be more useful than the large bowies I had sketched :D

Its snowing again, another couple inches on the ground. I moved and piled another 3 cords of white birch firewood the other day, so its going to be a couple more days of bucking and splitting some more, and once the snow is gone then start pulling loads up the hill for stacking. Got to get the 7 and a half cords piled before the heat and bugs gear up.

Taking my dad to the redsox game tomorrow at fenway, today i'm working on some home renovation projects i've had in the works. Sanding all the paint off an old door, stripping the walls and floor in my walk in closet to prep it for putting up cedar planking, etc.

Just finished the HT on the commemorative knife.
Getting ready to clean up and go to a HUGE wedding. It will cost about four times my annual salary. Should be a blast. Black Tie affair, but I will have to wear a English tux, as it is a Jewish wedding and I dare say I would be the only one in a kilt if I wore highland formal.

I did a demo today at a May day festival. I spent far more time talking than working. I did not sell anything but had a few people very interested. Even saw some cash as people were counting what they had on hand so maybe some of the " I will be contacting you soon" s will happen but I am not holding my breath. I had alot of fun and it didnt cost me anything so all is good. The weather held out for the festival it rained when I was looding and after I left but was mostly sunny while I was there. The one thing that sucked was I am not used to forging in the open so it was very hard to tell the temp on the steel. Sunday is back to work.

I put a new sneaker on the front of the ole Harley yesterday and a Clutch cable
a little clutch tweaking and it's time to play some.. :)

I need to forge out a papertowel rack for my mom for mother's day this weekend, it's goign to be a simple one forged from 3/8" round stock with a forged rose on the end of it.

Gonna try and stick a bigger gator gar than I did last night.

I'm effin' jealous! I've always wanted to go fishing for them. Unfortunately I don't live in an area that has them so I'm going to have to plan a fishing trip. The trick is getting some of my cheap a$$ buddies to spring for a trip :):)

BTW - This weekend for me:

Took today off of work to make it a three day weekend. Dropped my wife off at the airport and will be painting the soon-to-be baby's room.

Hopefully get some striper fishing in if this rain ever lets up.

Where you live? Come on down and we will go catch and shoot some. If you got a boat bring it too so we can really go get them.

I"m in DE so it's quite a hike to get down there.

I DO plan on catching one of those in my lifetime though.
