Terry, that is really cool. All of a sudden I picture camping out on the bank of a mountain lake, sitting on a camp chair (just as the morning dew is melting) painting on canvas, the spectacular scene my eyes behold. Ya man that is really cool.

Kook and I finished making a piece of steel earlier today http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o295/TBlade_2006/PICT2882.jpg the piece is 71" X1" X between 3/16 and 5/16, around a 140 layers of bandsaw blade and pallet strap, and I also HT’ed a blade of 1084. We started this welding project last Saturday but the heat of that day is what stopped two old men, from finishing up that day.

Fired up the forge about 7:00 AM and finished cooling down the forge and putting away all my forging stuff. Kook had to leave about 11:30. The blade is still in the tempering oven.

Just took the blade out of the oven, I'll give it another round later. Right now, Linda and I are to go for a ride on the ol' Shovel Head. When I get home I'll put the blade in for another tempering.

Sittin here lookin at some beautiful spalted maple trying to decide what to make out of it!!!!!
It's been sittin in my garage/shop for a year or more along with two big chunks of flame red wood. I just can't come up with an idea for a project that seems worthy! :foot:

Had a young lad come over from Smithfield to observe and start learning knifemaking. Nice chap. He brought his current project for critique, and it was quite good. I gave him a small anvil, some blade blanks, and a lot of advise. One was to log on to the BF and check out shop talk.

I worked on a new sword, and got the entire sunobe drawn out in about four hours of forging.Tomorrow I'll forge out the bevels. This is a very complex sword, and I have been planning it for a while. It has a modified spine, somewhere between kanmuri-otoshi and kamuri-otoshi. The O-kissaki will be very unusual, with a katana hai. Bevels will be hira -zukuri .The tsuba will be a showpiece if I can pull it off right. I picked up a 10' plank of alder at the lumber yard. It has been drying for about 20 years ,according to the sawyer, so I think it is dry enough for a saya.

It will be about 100F for the next three days, BTW.

Just got back from seeing my new grandson. He is 7 weeks now. Grandma and I are quite pleased. I told his dad and mom that I was going to forge a small set of blacksmith tools for him.

Going out to the smithy to do some sword forging ( and maybe a tiny set of tongs).

I fought mold in the basement all weekend =/ white fuzzy stuff coming from the grout between the tiles in the tiled basement floor. *sigh* I hate my basement. I like the rest of my house, but i hate my basement.

Stumbled upon this and decided, "what the heck". I spent Saturday a bit disappointed because I was supposed to be doing a shop visit, but the guy was called into work Friday night. Hey, you can't be mad at a guy for having to work though. I was just disappointed that we are going to have to reschedule (not sure when I'll have another weekend free).

I spent Sunday evening at one of my co-worker's house. He was kind enough to share with me his technique for making kydex sheaths and we knocked out one for a blade I designed a few years back. After having finally completing the blade while visiting another friend's shop a week ago (I guess it would be better to say, "having my friend correct all of my mistakes and complete it for me"), the blade needed to be sheathed so I could ship it out. I designed and started making it about two years ago for one of my officers I worked for in Ft. Hood. Now the frustration is trying to track him down so I can ship it to him. My last sighting of him was in Iraq a few months back, but now I'm having trouble tracking him down. E-mails have been sent, but still no response.

I'm really pleased with the completed blade and sheath and look forward to getting it shipped to him. Hope he responds soon as it is way over due for delivery.

Tightening down the hatches. Looks like we are on the outside fringes of Bill. They are forecasting 30 to 50 MPH winds and 6 to 10 foot waves in Buzzards Bay.:jerkit::jerkit:

Just came in from the smithy. Finished the HT on the sword I have been working on, and it is in the oven for the first 2 hour temper.
There was a huge thunderstorm that rolled in about the time I was forging in the final details. It poured ,wind blowing rain spray through the smithy, but I finished the hot work. While grinding in the shop, the power went out, but came back on about as soon as I was getting ready to go inside. I finished the final pre-HT grinding and was starting the thermal cycling when the big storm hit.The thunder and lightning made it look like an old monster movie, what with the forge running and me in big gloves and a heavy leather apron, pumping the red hot sword back and forth in the darkness ( the darkness was really a good thing). The forge was at the perfect temp, and the sword was hot, so I continued to draw it in and out for 15 minutes straight, until it was fully stress relieve ( three 5 minute cycles). Then I austenitized at 1550F for 10 full minutes. Quench was clean and the blade was near perfectly straight. Did the touch up with gloved hands and cleaned it up when cool. It is Rc61, now. Temper should drop it to Rc55-56. This is going to be a nice one.

Today I'm going to attempt to consolidate the ~2lbs of iron bloom iv'e got from from a smelt and hopefully get enough finished iron for a small blade of some sort.
