Week-end Post, What Are You Doing

I have a busy weekend planned. I have been on vacation most of this week, hoping to forge out some knife shaped objects. However, I've spent most of it mowing, digging up two tree roots, cutting sod and moving it to a bare spot in my yard, building a new garden. I did get my shop reorganized to the point where I took a cabinet out (yes, I actually decreased my storage capacity and gave to my wife for the garage). I did create more floor space in the shop, which I desparately needed. Oh, and I did forge out a ladder pattern hunter and a 52100 bowie. It's my first bowie and it turned out awesome. It's actually the same shape as the pattern I created for it!

Now that I have all of the "honey-do" stuff out of the way, I have the following planned for the weekend.
  • Forge out more knife shaped objects.
  • Watch some of the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600.
  • Watch the Cleveland Cavaliers stomp Detroit!!!!!!!
  • Pack for my trip to Fairbanks, Alaska next week. I fly out Monday morning. I'm hoping to hook up with Dustin Golat while I'm there. He goes by BigJimSlade on this forum. We'll tip back a few beers, visit in his shop and talk knives. I might even pick up some mammoth ivory while I'm in Fairbanks.

I'm sure you know this is just a joke/fake news clipping. Came out in 2002. Different versions have popped up since the Titanic went down.

Well I got my order in of steel and will be setup a new ran of knives. Going down south next week. But for this week-end just getting with family and friends. ---------

I will be wishing the best to my good friend and neighbor Ken who is going out to Ft McMurray to work in the mines. The strike at his workplace is forcing him to look for other work to help pay the bills and feed his loving familly. It will be hard as he has to be out of town working a shift of 4 weeks on and 2 weeks off. Sure will be a long time for the kids not to have Dad around.

yesterday i went with my mom to go look at property about 30 miles north of corpus christi, tx. we saw a few great finds and then asked the locals in the neighborhood about the area and found out that a couple of the ones we were looking at are in a flood zone. so alot of the houses in the area are built on stilts. we decided to pass up on the oppurtunity for a great buy. mom looked at one piece of property that used to be a church. it was under power lines and next to train tracks and a busy highway. we said no to that. we are still looking. at least i got to go smell and feel the breeze at my favorite fishing spot, goose island state park in rockport/fulton, tx. today mom and i were working on cleaning up the shop area here at grandpas house. tomorrow i have to run to the plumbing supply place and get a cartridge for the kitchen sink. then i also have to take a load of scrap to the salvage yard. so much work, so much to get out of the house, so little time. if anyone feels like doing some major cleaning up of a huge shop area, looking up and identifying of antique tools, and alot of organization, feel free to get intouch with me. :D HEHEHEHE!!!!!

Today I am working on a new Knife Design. I will be calling it the Blade of Thunder. Sunday will be cleaning up the shop. I heat treated two of the knives last night. Came out great on the harden tester at 60 Rc. Will post some photo's later on of the knife. How about all of you? What are you all doing this week-end.

I'm going to work on two knives that I heat treated last weekend while working on the retirement knife (I tried to use my time wisely, since the oven was already hot). A little 52100 utility type knife and a 4" blade damascus hunter. It's time to do the guards and handles. Both are hidden tang construction.

Well, I hope to get a cutlass ground full tang bowie (first one, looks ugly) and fillet cleaned up and boxed for HT. This morning I broke down some live oak trunk rounds down to smaller billets to eventually be handle material. Also put a few pieces in the vacuum chamber for stabilization. Dont forget, UFC Fight Night Live comes on tonight!

--EDIT-- First post as a knifemaker member!!

Yesterday I spent the day in the smithy with my buddy Kook, and we made our first twist pattern billet. Using band saw blade, pallet strap (HC) and some nickel. The billet is about 80 layers, 14" long and at the narrowest point of width about 3/4", when the bark is off it it is little under a 1/4" thick.

My new employer has the capability of evaluating the composition of the material I used, the head of the metalurgical dept. said I should bring in a couple of samples of the steel, as he needs to check his equipment monthly. He will be able to give me the elemental content, and the price is right

The billet was normalized and annealed over night, I took it out of the vermiculite this morning, took the forge scale off with 60 grit and gave it a quick etching in FE CL

That billet looks pretty good. I love damascus. Myself, I cleaned up the shop a bit, installed a starting capacitor in the "bad motor" of a dust collector from Grizzly"s dent and scratch tent sale. Fires right up now :) . Picked up one of the nichols file knife starters from my pile (I always start a bunch at once) and about got it finished. A bit more blade polishing (why are there always a couple scratches that mess with ya) and it will be ready for a sharping and looking for a home. Oh yea, set up a deal with my sister in law to sent her a lock back and a side lock folder blade patterns so she could do them into computer sw for a lazer cutter. Gonna make me a small batch of damascus folders. :D . I wish I didn't have to go back to the sweat factory tommorrow. Someday!

Well I'll be going fishing since the river flooded over yesterday from all the rain we got and I know bigger cats will be there now. Then I'll head to moms house later today because I have to help her neighbor Saturday and Sunday. I hope i can find some of those 30# cats people have been catching. Wish me luck.

Hope you catch some catfish. Nothin beats fried cats in cornmeal with hot sauce. this weekend I am goin to pull a vacuum on a couple more pieces of live oak, take others out to dry, maybe handrub a blade, and on Sunday get some trigger time on my 375 swamp stomper. Maybe I will bring the 7mm Remmy so I have a small gun to shoot while the barrel cools. For those of you who have not tried it, those Aimpoint red dot sights are well... bulletproof! I have had no failures yet with that scope shooting 260gr accubonds @ 2900fps.

...Oh yea, maybe drink some beer tonight. Been a while...

I'm heading home tomorrow after a week away (AGAIN!). I hope to spend some time with my lovely wife and maybe get a little shop time in on Sunday. I've gotten WAAAAY behind schedule in shop time due to travel lately and I'd like to have some stuff in progress for the Northeast Hammerin...

I want to try to finish a few blades before the hammerin up at wulf's , working on a pair of damascus sgian dubh right at the moment

I will be setup some new wheels for my surface grinder. A Pink and a White. I have two new blades to grind this week end. Will be ordering some new belts also for the 2x72 and the 2x48. Doing some cleaning and getting the yard cut. I will be looking forward to the T-Bone dinner Sunday. How about you all? ----------

Well today after me and my neighbor finished work we went back to his place (technically its his girlfriend's house and he moved in with her) and celebrated her 50th birthday along with a lot of family and a few good friends. At the end of her opening her presents he gave her his gift. He dropped to one knee and pulled out a box and opened it to reveal the ring. It was a beautiful ring. I have known the woman since I was 5 years old as well as her 2 kids. One of her kids I have known since she was born. Shes 15 and her birthday is 2 days after mine. Today started with a lot of hard work and ended with a great party and one very happy moment. Did I mention that I got to cool off from all the hard work by taking a swim in their pool? :D It was a great day.

Broke out the 2000 gram French pattern hammer and the guillotine fuller and hammered out the 6 inch stick tang from 5/16 stock on my latest attempt at a W2 ST 23. I'm kind of in limbo in finishing 4 knives plus whatever others I hammer out until I get my new handle broaches from John Perry. I'm also getting ready to heat treat an almost perfect (so far) little W2 hunter that will get an amboyna handle and go to live in the UK.:D
