What brands WON'T you own?

After receiving my 760 Lum Tanto with a horrible factory edge that needs re-profiling, I'm done with Benchmade. I don't mind getting one that needs a quick touch-up with a Sharpmaker, but this is ridiculous. I've never re-profiled a knife and I'm not gonna learn on a $280 MSRP Knife, so much for QC.
Oh wait, better not make it sharp someone might get hurt.
Spyderco has their QC issues now and then but at least they're ready to cut when you take them out of the box.
It's not like Benchmade had much going for them anyway other than the Lum Tanto or the Axis lock and after experiencing the Caged Ball Bearing lock, the Axis seems cheap.
Rant Over!
No more BM for me!!!

In the 2009 BM catalog, there isn't much that looks like a "got to have that" knife. The Barrage looks pretty good, but other than that, don't think there will be another BM in my future, unless they give us some better values.

I became a Spyderco convert, and after many years of resistance, (and the influence of Blade Forum) finally bought a Tenacious. Have to say very impressed with the value and F&F for $33. I will be adding a Spydie this year, a Sage probably.

Great response to this question, thanks to all who put their 2 cents in.;)

Without actually doing a tally of the responses, it seems that Spyderco is held in pretty high regard overall. Also surprising was the number of times Benchmade was on the "will never buy" list. Others mentioned (who shall remain nameless!) were not suprising.

lol This list is extremely disconcerting, for me. I am genuinely confused by it.

Kershaw

Reasons: don't like spring-assisted, flippers, or recurves [that makes up about 90% of their tactical knives]. Also, their forum presence was, uh, a little too divisive for me. There was a handful of knives that I would consider purchasing, but after seeing the behavior of who was chosen to represent their company on these forums, I'll pass.

Wow, that's pretty harsh, considering that Thomas always answered questions honestly. Sure he's passionate about his trade, but isn't that what we want as knife enthusiasts? You may not like flippers, AO's, or recurves, but there's no reason to get personal about it. I see Kershaw pushing the envelope in many different areas. I'm sorry that it doesn't work for you, but rest assured there are many knife lovers who really like the direction they've been headed the last couple of years.

Personally, I never count any particular company out. I've got some knives from just about every U.S. based maker out there and they all have something to offer. Of course, I just love knives...period, so maybe I'm easy to please.:D

It's no different than when people recoiled from those 3 famous words that Mick Strider typed in his long-forgotten subforum. Personalities sometimes rub people the wrong way. It's nothing personal.

Kershaw is a company that innovates and has recruited some very talented custom makers for designs in the past 5 or 10 years. They are using steels that only one other manufacturer dare's to experiment with, plus other steels that no one has even touched yet. Their sales are way up, even in this sagging economy.

Just not my thing.

Fair enough symphony:thumbup: When you put it like that, I can't argue with you. Like they say, "we buy what we like and we like what we buy.";)

There's always been folks on these forums that haven't like my style...mostly those that are fans of other brands, or don't like to be challenged. I don't know any of these posters personally, nor do they know me, but I tried to bring forth the little info and experience I know to these forums. For them to hate our brand because of me is...wow..sad. Nothing personal...yea right.

Heck of a lot nicer than I would have put it , also don't worry Thomas I think he was just trolling and trying to get a couple of us riled up.

That's laying it on just a little thick, don't you think? Where in Sympony's above displayed posts did he say he "hated" Kershaw? Oh, that's right, he didn't! Perhaps putting words in peoples' mouths was one of the things that turned him off to you and subsequently to Kershaw? I know that type of behavior was something that irritated me to no end about your posts, but fortunately, it hasn't turned me off to Kershaw.;)

I think it's pretty obvious that Thomas is referring to more than one person, and not necessarily symphonyincminor specifically.

Kershaw makes nice quality stuff. Even the lower cheap stuff like the Leeks have great build quality and is backed up by one of the best warranties in the business. I don't own that many kershaw knives compared to BM/Spyderco, but they definitely deserve consideration when purchasing your next knife.

I feel the same way, but have kept quiet about it, in no small part because of the kind of responses you just received.

It's one thing to call yourselves a mafia, it's another to lay mafioso attitude on potential customers. Brand image is created by a brand's representatives, and there is no good reason for a brand representative to imply someone is pathetic for stating their opinion in a thread asking for opinions.

You know, I am always telling myself I am NOT a Kershaw guy. Then I look at my desktop and see a dozen sitting here from 10years ago to a couple I bought recently. Weird! It's like the dependency you don't believe you have but is obvious to everyone else. :D

But I own only one "SOG". A customized Fusion Hawk. And one Gerber, the "Artifact" I have on my keyring. I have no desire to own anymore of they're products.

:)

The comments about Thomas W. are precisely what the knife community does worst - take, or make an issue about something that has nothing to do with the physical product and thereby hold a negative attitude about it.

Time to grow up, kids.

Yes, I said that. Life has far more important and difficult conflicts than whether you like the syntax or writing style of someone on the internet. Step back from the keyboard, put your hands in the air, and admit you don't have the maturity to interact with other adults.

Communicating with the written word requires 1) competence and understanding of it's construct, 2) an agreement with the unwritten rule that you will conduct yourself in a polite and responsible mannner in your message, 3) Leaving others enough room to say things in a way you might not - because you can't see or hear the physical and inflectional nuances of an actual spoken sentence - which is 90% of the message.

I know, all some of you might get out of that paragraph is a gruff lecture - you can't SEE me smiling, or HEAR my lighthearted banter about it. If there was any.

Tough. It's up to you how you take it, if at all. NO DOUBT, some have not done well in the past. I consider their posts in the exact same light as those who misconstrue or misinterpret them - an exercise in ignorance. BOTH could do better. SOME learn from their mistakes. MANY continue to hold petty juvenile grudges and fail to move on.

If someone takes away some useful, serious information and is able to improve their lot, more power to them. Those who prefer to make it a dog fight for their amusement have their just reward waiting - a complete lack of credibility or respect. I imagine that's quite the opposite of what they thought they'd gain.

IT's CALLED BLADEForums, not TRASHTHEMAKERForums. I wondered who would be the next brave soul hunted down by the rabble.

(Background sounds of guillotine being tested.)
