What brands WON'T you own?

I expressed a negative opinion some time back in the general forum about AO, I think in a thread asking for opinions about them. Thomas replied in a manner that was extremely abrasive and defensive. I didn't know him from Adam at the time but a little research showed him to be representing the Kershaw company in their branded forum. I was surprised that someone of that disposition was "front man" to the public. For the record, I have spent the last 30 years as "front man", customer service, technical service and/or marketing technician in three different non-knife oriented industries. FWIW the OD-1 and Skyline now share my light knife days with a Kabar Dozier Thorn and a Salsa.

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I just bought my first SOG knife, I was warned on this forum before buying and I bought anyways. Well the blade has a lot of play, the knife handle rattles, and the blade knicks the clip. All this for a $165 MSRP knife. I'll be cautious before buying another SOG knife and that is the nicest I can say.

btw: that SOG is going in the mail tomorrow!

$165 and the thing rattles!

I must concur I have owned a few sog knives although most are fixed blades. I love the fixed blades but the few folders by SOG I own leave me wanting. I have a flash rescue and a twitch 2. The only one I actually carry is the twitch 2 and that is on sundays because I like the slim profile and I pretty much assume that the most work it will get is probably cutting strings, trimming the runoff on the sides of candles and possibly a steak or chicken after church.

Extremely abrasive and defensive, but not link or direct quote.

As usual, a great example of my exact point.

The phrase, "they took it wrong" has a meaning and often applies. It's strange that the American language, which is saturated with special rules and inclusive of so many descriptive words and phrases, can also be the least understood or appreciated by it's practitioners.

I've got a Boa that won't stay locked, and a Vapor II with the older, more difficult thumbstud. Kershaw doesn't make much that I currently want. I do recognize that either of us could change, and the holy grail of knivescould suddenly burst from production.

Whining about a post I misunderstood or took personally and holding a grudge would certainly deprive me of an opportunity. I didn't like what Bill Ruger said about magazine capacity, but now I own an LCP and I'm happy with it, six rounds max and all.

Experience and maturity help make better decisions.

I don't understand something, please explain it to me.

This thread is about what knives you won't buy. If you don't want to buy a Kershaw, fine, don't buy a Kershaw. It's no skin off the rest of our backs. If you want to say you won't buy a Kershaw because of Thomas, then say so and let it go at that.

However, this is not the place for a bitch session about Thomas or anybody else. If that's what you want, start a thread in Whine & Cheese and you can go at it to your heart's content. But I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't commandeer what has been a very enjoyable thread with your bickering.

Alright, I mis-spoke. I don't want you to explain it to me. I want you to knock it off or take it elsewhere.

At BladeHQ thousands of knives are sold by same person. That person allows something like that to be sold in his/her store under his/her supervision- what does that say about him/her? What does it say about the store? It's pretty poor judgment.

And I agree with you, some of the ebay rules are too restrictive. I can't buy auto knives, and no C4:thumbdn::grumpy:

It says to me that in this great country folks can say, sell, and believe whatever they wish.....no one has the right to not be offended. If Robbie is as you folks say he is.....well,at least he's got the balls to say it. The "race card" is way overplayed these days. Hell, look at that cluster f%$k of a situation in MA with that loudmouthed professor. The fear ofbeing called a racist holds a lot of people back. Speak your mind, because others will and not worry due to a pronounced double standard.Just my two cents.

The Swamp Fox:D

And I have the balls to say he can, well, fill in the blanks as this isn't Whine & Cheese.
And I'd tell that jerk to his face what I think of him too(done it to other racist jerks, and strangely they DIDN'T have the balls to do anything about it).
Racist pricks get no quarter from me. If they want to be racist morons they can do it out of sight and hearing from me, or I will likely do something about it.

Could the guys who don't like Bear MGC,give me a little background. I have always wondered why you don't hear more about them, considering they are an american company after all.

Well exactly, the great thing about this country is you can say what you want and believe what you want, and we have a right to choose based on that. If Robbie Dalton wants to be like that, good for him, and I give him credit for having the guts to be open about it but now I won't even look at his knives among with many other alienated collectors.

As for BladeHQ and any other businesses, it's not their best interest to be selling stuff like that and they know it. According someone in on the Dalton business, those types of knives are sold and discussed on Dalton's forum, apparently very selective in registering new members.

This thread started off great and was very helpful to me, a knife newbie, but now it seems to have degenerated. Nevertheless, there are some brands I will now steer clear of because of this thread, and for that I am thankful.

I am surprised that Ka-Bar would show up on anyone's "no buy" list. Their knives seem like great value for the money. I would never baton a Ka-Bar USMC and then complain if it broke. The knife was designed to open rations, pound tent stakes, cut rope, and -- lest we forget -- stab enemies. For these tasks, it excels.

I think the Ka-Bars that are on peoples' "no buy" list are the imported stuff. At least I hope so. Because if anybody wants to talk crap about the USMC knife, I'll be the first one to take them on.

Hmmm... I sort of aggree with the viewpoint that is you are closed off completely to a single brand you might miss something worth while; However... Brands that really hype the whole militaristic / assassin sort of thing always seem to come off a little wierd to me. I do own one Mercwerx knife, (the Shiva) which seemed like a good idea at the time, but the ergonomics / grip / safety is definately dangerous to a user in a "tactical" situation. I'm a collector in the true sense though - I've got about 70 or so knives - ranging from Brend to no name.

Short answer (maybe because some of the guys on here might laugh at me if I bought one:)

I'd have to say Dark Ops.... but still, for the jokes I might buy one.

I won't stay away from a brand but do stay away from Chinese made knives. I don't care how many times someone says this knife or that knife is good. I don't care how much of a bargain it is. If it is made in China I won't buy it. Too many things are virtually out of our control as to being Chinese made but my knives will never come from there. I won't give reasons because they would belong in the political forum but that is my stance. Otherwise I don't discriminate from any company.

Why? These guys make quality stuff. Didn't you say you liked your cqc10

I used to like it until I could make the liner lock budge and almost unlock by white knuckling it. I was then able to do it to a CQC-7 also. I don't want to turn this into an argument thread. It's just my preference.

Why Boker? (Just wondering) They make a decent product. Is it just their designs that don't attract you?

Don't care for their frame locks or their designs.

why won't you own crkt, benchmade or emersons? i like all those brands is there something i should know?

Benchmade has major QC issues. They are becoming the new Gerber. CRKT used to be good many years ago and now I think they are junk. Already covered Emerson above.

lol This list is extremely disconcerting, for me. I am genuinely confused by it.

That's ok. We all have our own preferences.

Me too, what's the beef with Extrema ratio?

Extrema Ratio = too mall ninja-ish, and too expensive for something that is all mall ninja-ish.

Busse knives look great but like Chris Reeve knives they are just too much money in my opinion.

Remember folks.....this is "What brands WON'T you own?"

Frost - goes without saying. I have never seen one, but I am slightly curious about how much of a knife $1 buys you.

If it cuts anything and the blade isn't made of tin, it seems like it might be worth a buck.

When you bear in mind that that means it only probably cost them $0.50 to make them...I don't see how you can make a quality knife with a quality ANYTHING for that little. Imagine the heat treatment...if there is one at all. Quality control? Are you kidding? Fit and finish? What's that? :D :D :D

Can't expect me to know any better at the innocent young age of 62. I want to be you when I grow up.

I don't take this discussion seriously enough to buy a gold membership so I can spend hours tracking down a specific quote. If you read the whole post you'll see where I didn't let the experience keep me from buying some Kershaws when they made some I liked.

Have a nice day. :)

I guess I won't own a kershaw just because I don't like many of their designs and I refuse to own a smith and wesson knife again. biggest heaviest non cutting piece of knife I ever had. The other knife that I will not have is a bear grylls knife. I actually like the knife but there is no way this side of jupiter that i will pay that much for a knife unless it jumps out of my hand and cuts up everything on its own and resheaths itself.

I actually read over your conversation, if you want I can repost it for you. The way I read it Thomas didn't seem to be abrasive at all.

But wouldn't that take all the fun out of it...? :D
