What did you rehang today?

I've got most of the work done on this old Stohler axe, I carved the handle out of some American Beech I felled and dried. Gave her a few whacks today and I'm impressed!

Plumb national pattern boys axe I picked up a while back. I used a council tool replacement handle and a home made black locust wedge.

Dan, nice work on the handles. That pattern of axe (the first one there) isn't something I come across often but see from time to time on auction sites and of course French tool sites. What do you call that pattern there in France? Definitely some offset on that handle. What type of wood did you use for that one? Ash?

Also, did you do up the handle on the GB as well?

Proof that you don't need a whole host of tools to make a handle.

Agent H,

Thanks. It's a Mosellane felling axe, Moselle being a part of the Lorraine area. A forge industry area since the middle age. I live not far from Moselle, in the Ardennes forest close to the belgian border and this pattern was, at the time it was still produced and used, praised by the foresters. They are hard to find now. As you can see there is no poll thus the offset to balance the head, i use it for everything including felling. The wood is ash but, as the handle can be removed just by pushing away the wedge located at the poll, i will make an other one made of birch which will be more comfortable.

The GB handle is a custom one made for the British supplier. It's made of beech and is amazing, great balance, great grip, very comfortable. I couldn't have designed and made such a handle.

I don't use much tools indeed, more funny. I try to do it à la Finnish, and i want to thank you for the thread you opened about the early Finnish axes, very interesting and inspiring.

Dan.

Does the square thing have a purpose Dan?

Love your work. The haft on the GB looks very inviting.

Square Peg, Garry3,

Thanks.

Do you mean the piece of glass on the log? It's a scraper, i don't like to use sand paper and i don't like the result it gives. I don't have made the GB handle, i wish i could!

My son in law's father gave him this. He had purchased it years ago somewhere in British Columbia. I put it onto a nice 28"octangular handle.
