What did you rehang today?

Hi

I put a new handle in my Hultafors Agdor yesterday.
The handle is made by Smedbergs Hickory, which actually makes the handles for both Gränsfors and Hults Bruk.
When I bought this axe it had a split in the handle, so they sent me a new one and I got to keep the one with the broken handle so I could hang it!

Where do you get hickory I looked at a lumber store near me there hickory didn't have tight grain when I make something I do it right but I can't find any good wood. My dad is a carpenter and he has some iron wood in the garage. He said he is never going to use it. It coated him a fortune. He bought it because it was a 1 in a life time chance.

If hickory isn't readily available in good quality I'd look for rock maple or ash, they're great substitutes. I've used both harvested from right behind my house and they work fairly well.

I bought that handle from a local hardware store. I had little success finding rough sawn hickory here in sweden. Traditionally birch was used for axe handles here in the north of sweden, so I will try that one day!

I love the look of hickory. I have looked all over for hickory. I'm in Wisconsin USA hard to find here.

You should ask your local woodshop if they can order some tennesse hickory. Oh, the lovely grains of hickory. ;)

Yeah I think I will. I'm getting a king Kutter broad head that the handle is shot so I think I'll use Hickory for that. I also like oak but it's its strong but not strong enough for a full length axe but it will work for smaller stuff like a hatchet or hammer.

Pretty much as perfect a haft, with regard to grain orientation and straight grain, as I've ever seen. Was this BS luck or did you get to select that piece of wood?

I did select this piece, had to go through a bunch of handles, all had OK grain, but this one was perfect. It's got the best orientation I've ever seen actually, so I guess I was pretty lucky finding this piece.

Lucky in finding this haft but not at all lucky in knowing what it is you wanted. Good for you!

Lucky you!

I bought one of those at an estate sale some months back but I haven't put it on the line yet.

When you get it online tag me in it so I can see. The guy told me its like a foot and a half in diameter so its not a huge one.

Can someone help me this is a a broad head that was given to me I can make out what the trademark is.

There are so many works of art in this thread, but sometimes all you have is a quality tool that is not necessarily a looker. Here is one.

This is a very old forge welded full sized Dayton head on a 17.5" straight handle. Great stuff as far as I'm concerned, but not super valuable or collectable. I have too many items and listed it as is for a starting price of $15 on the Bay. It went unsold several times as most of my other items sold no problem. I kept putting off dealing with it as the head was loose but hard to remove. It has been in my furnace room for a while and probably dried so I tried once again to remove the head without damaging the excellent handle. Finally success. Three big washers finally cam loos with pliers and I was able to remove the head. I cleaned it, resurfaced and oiled the handle before re-wedging, and now it need nothing other than the butt mushrooms removed and a sharpening. I'll list it for $25 now, and if it wont sell for that I will happily keep it and use it by the campfire. This is not an art piece, but it is an awesome axe in my opinion.

BTW- there are many nice alternative wedge options of various colored hardwoods that I and other have successfully used with clean, new cut kerfs, but IMO nothing is better than the traditional poplar for filling in rough voids as seen here. If you have an old but still viable handle that you want to have as good a surface match as possible, stay with the traditional poplar.

A buddy said he'd always wanted an axe in the Hudson Bay shape, so I got ahold of this one and re-hafted it. Hope he likes it.

Sweet axe. Looks like you got the ultra fine belt out. Wedge looks fantastic. I've never seen a Craftsman Hudon Bay, thanks for posting this.

JB- I like that axe. It's got old charm. The handle, is it a full-sized just cut down?
