What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

Today I carry in my pocket this beautiful knife Schrade scrimshaw!!!

2lt6kh.jpg

Lookin' good, I had one of those Schrade Barlows and gave it to a knifeless friend. 15 years later we're still friends but every time I see that knife I Ger mixed emotions. Happy because he loves it and uses it all the time but miserable because I really liked it and if I woulda waited I woulda got him an Opinel #8. At least it gets used and I know he appreciates it :) still it was a knice knife. :(

-6 F this morning and the birds are hungry. I've never seen a rainbow at this temperature, that I recall. There are very fine ice crystals in the air. Must be a refraction through them. Couldn't get a decent picture though.
Another little Ohta today.

A Queen Railsplitter in D2 and amber stag bone. The action is a bit rough, and the blades are kind of puffy, as Queen has a habit of producing. But the rest of the fit and finish is very nice.

That's a looker, Frank!:thumbsup: I wasn't familiar with the technical term "puffy" as applied to knife blades, but I see what you mean. :)

Thanks! This is my second GEC; the first was a #35 that set the bar really high, and the fit and finish of this one is no less impressive. Something about that inky black ebony and steel liners that really gives this one some class. What have I gotten myself into...:D
To paraphrase Field of Dreams: "Is this heaven?" "No, this is The Porch." ;) Looks like you have an impressive initial pair of GECs, @solphilos !:thumbsup::cool:

5K Qs 5K Qs I may be wrong but im call it a coping blade, it's 2.5" from tip to bolster.
Thanks for your comments:thumbsup:
Thanks for the additional info, Rob; such a phenomenal Barlow!:thumbsup:

Holy Stag Böker, FBC, that one is incredible!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Hi Gary, I trust that you and yours had a nice Christmas.
I guess that shield sorta looks like a modified corset. What knife makers call a bomb shield doesn’t really look like a bomb to me.
@Ratbert , thanks for the Christmas wishes and for the opinion on that cool shield on your Coats. :)

Some stout and my Beer Scout. Trying to not think about returning to work tomorrow.

First, let me extend Season's Greetings and welcome to The Porch, @Postlapsaria!! :) (Does your username indicate that you're some kind of Calvinist theologian?? ;)) That looks like a handy knife and a dandy stout!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Today something simple for a short walk to the woods

D Dirk D , that's a very nice Otter on a leash you have for a pet! ;):thumbsup::cool:

Put that in your Backpocket :)
I'd forgotten that you had that dream machine, Gev!!:cool::cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

The stars aligned, the gods smiled upon me, or circumstances were simply just perfect, but I was able to acquire a knife that has been on my short list ever since they were produced earlier this year. It arrived yesterday and made my Boxing Day all that much more enjoyable! Into the pocket it went.

Congrats on the sheep foot TC Barlow, Dylan!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

My new (as of yesterday) smooth bone #78. Put my edge on it and will be in pocket for the remainder of the week at least.

We hit our high for the day so just about to head out and walk Mocha our Brown Australian Shepherd. I swear she's part Husky:thumbsup: yesterday's high was to reach 0° but it peaked at -9°

Congrats on the new #78, Paul,:cool::thumbsup: and condolences on the frigid weather. We had -7 yesterday at 5am, but it was calm and the day turned out to be gloriously sunny with a high of 12. This morning at 4:30 it was -9 with a -20 windchill. But we have Lake Michigan to moderate the temperature extremes a bit; I can't imagine what ND cold snaps are like!:eek::thumbsdown:

Thanks, Gary! Happy New Year to you, too!
Thanks, Dean. :)

Thanks, GT! She's still not quite sure why everyone is standing around watching her or why we're instructing her to destroy things, but she's happy with the end results. I'm assuming next year (she'll be 2 1/2 then) will be a bit different.

I've got this trio today:

Glennbad Barlow, @JK Knives Bluegill, and the 'Nut.
Thanks for the Christmas update, Shawn! :D Wow, the bone on your glennbad Barlow is out of this world!!:cool::thumbsup:

Superb knife, Lance!:thumbsup::cool: (You should make a nice fob or lanyard for it, or aren't you a lanyard guy?)

I was in a duck blind a good part of today and had a Grohmann D.H. Russell No. 2 Trout and Bird knife with me (plus an Imperial Barlow in the pocket fro cigar trimming). After about an hour in the blind, I got a very hefty Canadian goose to go with the Canadian belt knife. Things slowed down after the goose gathering, but it still was a great day to be out. Ducks were flying all day, just not near us. We even saw some swans, which we don't hunt.

Today I carry in my pocket this beautiful knife Schrade scrimshaw!!!

Congrats on bagging your Christmas goose, Stuart!:cool::thumbsup: Nice photos, but I don't think winter duck blinds agree with my constitution!:rolleyes:
Senhor Pinto, you may not want to carry your scrimshaw Schrade near Stuart when he's targeting ducks on the wing!! ;):D

Goodness gracious, those 35s are aces!! @Mohawkjk2 , your stag 35 is phenomenal!:thumbsup::cool:

Happy Holidays!

Same to you, Drew! :) That rubber band gun brings back memories for me. We used to make ours out of scrap wood, and they were only single-shot, but we used high caliber "rubber bands" cut from old car/truck inner tubes, so they had serious "stopping power"! :p:thumbsup:

For the last week of 2017:
Alox of the Week is a blue Pioneer Pruner (thanks, Ken):

Thank you "T.Erdelyi", I'm sorry that you no longer have yours, but it's still time to buy another!!!

Thank you very much for your concern about my safety Mr. GT, but he must be very far from Portugal!!!

Another little Ohta today.

Love the Ohta Gary, I love the angry bird reference:p. I've worked outdoors for decades but as I age I detest the extremes:) with -17° for the daytime high, Saturday will be an indoor day:eek:

Thanks, Paul. I just spent an hour outside blowing and shoveling snow. One of the cars wouldn't start and needed a jump. I'm about ready to head south!

Thanks Gt, that´s a kind of pet, I like- besides, it´s the only one ;-)

And the Joker is a fine one- simple but reliable. The only thing, I don´t like with te most spanish and also french ones ist the upstanding tang, but this can be solved with a pouch

Shoulda known from the crisp lines on the Scrimmed scales and the crisp stamping on the bolsters. The ones they make Schrade now are nice lookers but the 7CR17MOV although the V is supposedly for Vanadium none of the Chinese variants show any listed in the composition and if it's there it's less than .o4% so it's effect is negligible. Being as the 7CR17MOV is the Chinese analog to 440a I'd love to see them use even a slightly better steel, at least a 9CR18MO/440C.

Thanks for the other pictures, you're lucky to have 2 nice examples.
