What was the spyderco that got you hooked?

A couple of other things on this subject...

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Sharpmaker, including myself. It may be my most important knife related item I own. Its results exceed my standards.

This thread also reminds me of how long Spyderco has been around and that I could have been carrying a Spydie for the last 20 plus years if I had just done a little research. I am almost embarrassed because I have carried a pocket knife since I was a teen and learned how to keep them sharp early. I have tried many of the different sharpening products out there and always went back to a double sided stone. If I would of had a Sharpmaker all these years my sharpening chores would of been a lot different.

That is so true Sok, I owned the Sharpmaker first as well. I picked it up in an effort to keep the knives I had sharp. I loved it and the more I researched, the more I found out about the company and their other products. I have never been disappointed! Oh, by the way, my first Spyderco knife was a Resilience.

I bought a Delica combo edge several years ago and used it as a work knife using and abusing it. It was chosen at the time because it was light weight and of course all the rave reviews. Well in the end I went back to carrying my Benchmades thinking Spydercos really weren't anything special. The delica just didn't speak to me... As my taste in knives evolved I started figuring out what I did and didn't like. I found I prefered G10 scales with steel liners and don't really care about having a super light weight knife much. Then I started to appreciate premium blade steels and noticed Spyderco offered much more variety than the competition and usually at much better prices. The last straw that pushed me over the Spydi-edge was BMs poor QC as of late. The last 4-5 BMs I purchased had significant flaws IMO. So fast forward to last year; I took the plunge and the answer to the OPs question is the Manix 2 FFG S30V standard black G10 model. I felt this knife was on a whole other level from ANYthing I had purchased previously. SOOO smooth, perfect f&f, excellent steel, and my first FFG blade on a edc type folder. Also the choil the I had previously dislike on largeish fixed blades became a wonderous new discovery for me greatly increasing the utility of a pocket knife. After using the manix I just had to try more, and more, and more...

I feel the same way about the endura. It didn't really impress me. Fanatastic slicer, looks good, like the vg10 but overall didn't like it. More blade play than any knife I've had, lock didn't seem very secure either and blade was to thin for my liking to. I have to try something else of their's though cause having so many people talk them up gotta be somehting to that. The Manix was one i had my eye on before i eventually went with benchmade adamas which i love so probably gonna go with that or military, tuff, southard or something. Never buying endura or delica again though. Both benchmades that if have bought have been nothing but perfect for me adamas and mini grip but mini grip axis lock doesn't go all the way forward which kind of bugs me but otherwise perfect.Zero blade play, very solid lock up, and just feel they they could handle any task to me. One bad thing i will say about benchmade is both of them have had the worst factory edges i've ever seen on knife. Crazy dull barely able to cut printer paper dull which actually had me with a bad opinion on my adamas til i got it to hair popping sharp with help from dmt stones.

It was either the Tenacious, which was my first, or the Manix 2 which was my third Spyderco. I'm pretty sure I could tell they were the best once I got the Tenacious in my hands.

I bought a ZDP delica for my dad and wanted one for myself. I wasn't super happy with my own delica though, but I was impressed with my Caly 3 and loved my Ladybug (until I lost it).

A plain old Delica4 got me hooked. The irony is that it's really all the knife I ever need, but got me addicted to the phenomenal quality and variety of Spyderco.

For me, it was something of a progression. My first Spyderco, a Peter Herbst, convinced me of the value of the Spyderhole, but it was wrong handed and about as ergonomic as a stick. The Native convinced me the midlock was the best lock for me, and that the 50/50 choil was a very desirable feature, but the gimmick grind, partially occluded Spyderhole, and less than totally comfortable handle left room for improvement. The Calypso Jr, came closer to the mark, its only annoyances being the silly beveled spine and the sharp transition between the thumb ramp and the rest of the spine. Then the Stretch came along, perfect ergos, great blade, only the SS/Kraton handle as a downer. CF version cured that, but was still a bit too thin. FRN version fixed that.

Of course, the one that got me hooked the worst was the Kiwi. Perhaps because I was never one for rings, bracelets, chains, or watches, it became my perfect little platform for highly functional jewelry.

I picked a pm2 out of hundreds of knives at a knife shop. At the time I had no clue that it had such a following. I also didn't know anything about knives at the time. I just thought it felt great and looked good. I also have a blue Lava for the office and want to get a Domino because I collect flippers.

You can love it or hate it but the Dodo got me hooked on spyderco and knives in general.

My first Spyderco was an original Endura. I've been a Spyderco fan ever since.

Not necessarily your first one, (though I'm sure it is the first for most) but the one that really got you hooked on spydercos. For me it was the Dragonfly salt. Don't even own it anymore, but that's the one that started it all. What about you guys?
Must be the Manix 2 LW, just ordered an Endura, and have a Salt 1 on my wish list, I will be ordering on the 3rd.
