It's possible that 28 dealers made the same assumption that Hoback's knives were all made in America. I could even venture a hypothetical guess that they'd look at his customs with awareness of where they are made and draw a conclusion; one that was underinformed unless they went digging and figured out they technically don't know where it came from. I would guess that same thing applies to the private owners of sumos. How many times do I have to say that I don't give him the benefit of the doubt? I've said repeatedly that he should have been more proactive in correcting the COO information. I'm just not prepared to say that he lied directly to the dealers when all evidence suggests that he didn't. His website NEVER claimed that his knives were 100% USA made. His own listing for his knives lists NO country of origin. And no dealer has claimed that he told them his knives were 100% USA made. But if you insist on believing something with no evidence to back it up, then that's what you're going to do (over and over and over again).
What I do know is that Hoback didn't take any steps to alert the public, and all we have is his word (for what that's worth) that he notified some (not even all) of these dealers.
We have no evidence that the dealers all were labeling these "Made in the USA" with ill intent, either- I'm less inclined to believe 28 different companies were up to unethical shenanigans.
For once and for all- leave the dealers out of it.
Jake Hoback for whatever reason, perhaps carelessness, thoughtlessness or in full knowledge of opportunistic gains, decided to obfuscate the country of origin.
Then, in full knowledge of his screw up, elected to press on with the lie instead of getting in front of it.
This mess is completely his doing and it starts and ends with him.
end of story.
