You Carry a Knife Because?

Your previous answer on this thread was "because I can". If NKP get scared or annoyed enough by punks flipping and brandishing one-hand opening knives, they can vote to ban it as dangerous items. Or, at least require concealed carry permit for it. It HAS happened for autos and balisongs federally and in many states. It can happen again, and in New York it HAS happened.

You can be a good ambassador of knife carrying crowd and convince NKP that knife carrying is OK, or you can be a jerk, flip them off, and make them vote to ban knife carry.

Nothing was said about brandishing or acting like a "jerk". When I said "because I can" it had zero to do with rights. My response was simply I carry beacuse I am able to and want to. I don't have a specific reason. It could be a thousand different reasons I just don't enumerate them. Then I was labeled obnoxious so I merely responded. I don't agree with idiots that brandish knives either. I CCW so by nature I keep things very discreet.

Being condescending for no good reason is never cool.
Especially when this thread has nothing to do with rights at all.
It is about personal reasons we chose to carry knives, not an intrusive government thing making you justify what you purchase, like, or carry.
I'm beginning to get sick of those who get all riled up before the hat is even dropped.
This is a knife discussion board.
Discussion, not enforcement or anything even close to it.
Some of you are awfully sensitive for no good reason, and it gets old.

Wasn't it condescending to call me obnoxious without first knowing my intentions? My original post had nothing to do with rights even though some apparently viewed it that way. I have over 800 posts on this board and the only one that wasn't about knife discussion was the one responding to me being obnoxious. I didn't get "riled up" until then.

I have carried a knife since I was 7 or 8 years old. I carry a knife because it is a very useful tool.

I go to college in NE Philadelphia and i first started to carry to make myself feel somewhat more protected. Then u started finding myself using it more often to open stuff. now its second nature. I really dont see it as protection now but i always am mindful that its there if i need it. When i leave my apartment its keys, phone, wallet and knife. always

Well, in that case you could have said "too numerous to mention". It sounds much better and not flippant.

I only carry and use my knife when necessary. If a box of tv dinner has an easy way to open, I don't use my knife just because I can. When people catch me using a knife it's for an obvious good reason, not simply because I can. When they ask me why I carry a knife, the answer is most certainly not "because I can". I have been asked this question before, and I always make an effort to answer in a reasonable and friendly manner. It goes a long way in dispelling the notion that pocket knives are nothing but weapons, and that only punks and criminals carry them.

You sound like a reasonable person, so you should do us all a favor and present a good image to everybody else out there. This board is full of stories where an older gentleman with folksy and friendly manners convince others that carrying a knife is not only OK, it's actually smart.

Please keep in mind this is the internet and people say things a little more in jest than they would in ordinary life. I believe people are reading way too far into my very simple answer.

A knife is a standard part of my attire. It's a lucky charm. It's a tool with hundreds of uses.

Why wouldn't someone carry a knife?

I've carried a knife since I was a boy. I've used knives on the job and off on a daily basis. I've found them useful for all the normal things knives are used for and for that reason comforting.

tipoc

I work at a private residence as a Horticulturist/groundskeeper/handyman/etc. If I was to forget my knife I'd just go home and not work.
Of course that doesn't happen since I have knives stashed everywhere on me, my pack, my vehicle............

Because I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Not every day, but probably most days I don't need my knife. But when I need it I am glad I have it - it is definitely good to have it when the need does arise.

To me it is a little like wearing a seatbelt while driving a car - most of the time you don't need it, but you don't want to be without it when you do need it. Though for some people that do have a regular need for their EDC knife, I kinda wish I need mine more often.

When I said "because I can" it had zero to do with rights.

 What else could you have possibly meant when you said "because I can"? Or did you just want to let us know that you are physically capable of lifting a knife?

I carry the knife because I need to cut staff.
Why do I carry my second and sometimes the third knife is a totally different question

Nice to see another student in Philly

I carry a knife because it is one of the most useful things that you can carry around with you. There's not much else that allows you to cut an orange (or whatever food item), boxes, packages, open mail, and also fits in such a small package.

In fact, not a few minutes ago, I just used my Umnumzaan to cut ribbon to tie up t-shirts; the scissors they provided were tearing more than cutting. A knife enabled me to cut 200 pieces in the time it took everyone else to do 50.

And no one even made a remark about my knife.

Probably had a lot to do with what I was doing at the time, haha.

I carry because I like em. Kinda like how a little kids brings their favorite toy everywhere. I also carry because I like to exercise my rights.

Do you really want to keep this going? I don't really care what you think I meant. And I'm the obnoxious one?

I agree completely. I have always answered "because I can" when the question comes up. I see nothing wrong with that answer. I'm glad and happy that I can carry a knife without a problem. If I lived in some Western European countries, I couldn't make that claim.

I'm sorry if this statement offends anyone, but that will not stop me from making it. Why, well....because I can.:)

I didn't care about your original post.
I was commenting on the definitely obnoxious comment slandering the people of an entire country.
I stand by my judgement that to do so was obnoxious.
