ZDP-189 Lum Chinese folder.

Regardless, I think a Sprint run of Laminated ZDP-189 Lum Chinese Folders with the Burgundy handles, Gold Spyderbug on the blade, and a Black pocket clip with a Gold Spyderbug on it too, would be incredible.

While solid ZDP-189 would be nice the Laminated would be more in keeping with a Lum Chinese Folder as it would give the appearance of a Hamon line.

I couldn't have summed it up better myself.

Color wouldn't be as important to me as retaining the laminated blade though.

Very cool idea for sure. If it was out by Christmas I'd get one for my brother for sure. He has a green one that is his favorite EDC. I'd end up picking one up for myself too around '06 tax return time.

Looking forward to it. Not as much as I'm looking forward to the new redesigned Lil' Temp though. (shameless plug) :D But that's a topic for another post.

I might be in the minority with Carlos, but I agree with him about the color. A burgundy Chinese folder would fall in line with the Calypso and make it seem like an emulation, but with no real advantage. It's not like the Chinese will be made of the same FRN to save on costs. I'm guessing the paint's going to cost the same to mix and apply no matter what the color.
If that's the case, I'd much rather this sprint run have it's own unique color to distinguish it - to say that it's a one of a kind breed. My personal preference would be a burnt orange or dark golden color since I don't recall Spyderco ever having a knife in such a color. It would be something different.

How about Navy Blue, that would get it in line with the ZDP-189 Delica. It could be an awesome colour for the Chinese folder too.

PLEASE NO BURGUNDY. I loved the ZDP Calypso but sold it because I couldn't stand the colour. It is really a horrible colour for the knife (no offense to you guys who like it). Please make the Lum Chinese in a "classier" subtle colour - the best suggestion was the almite colour on the mouse. That is an awesome colour.

Sal, please please consider a different colour. I know a lot of guys who are eschewing the ZDP Calypso because of the burgundy colour.

Also, I really loved the Lum Chinese but think that it should really be updated with a thicker liner, or, better still, a ti-framelock.

That blade really deserves the best treatment possible. Oh, and yes, ZDP189 with the lamination line. AND NO BLACK CLIP with gold bug.

Thanks.

I think the general consensus so far is:

Blade - Laminated ZDP-189 (I like the Gold Spyderbug on the Blade)

Handle Color - so far a lot are saying Burgundy, but quite a few are wanting another color with Burnt Orange being 1 suggestion. I would like the Burgundy but in a darker shade than on the Calypso Jr, unless you can reproduce Royal Blue finish on my Colt Python... :D

Pocket Clip - some are Ok with the Black but a lot really don't care with others wanting a stainless or titanium finish.

Quite a few details have not been covered:

1) Other than the ZDP-189, what steel will it be laminated with.

2) What kind of screws will be used or do we stick with the original screws on the Lum Chinese Folder.

3) Do we want the liner lock to be the same as the Lum Chinese Folder or should we anodize it another color to further set it apart.

Ok posters we have gotten Sal's attention lets give him an idea of what we want.

Seems to me that this if done will be a higher end model so why not give it Ti scales and Ti clip. They would give it a classy Grey finnish and hold up to EDC much better than Alum.
I haven't been able to get this idea out of my head all morning. Ti scales would be in keeping with the original Bob Lum prototype and would look great. I assume it would be possible to use the original CNC program. A Ti clip wouldn't be necessary, a sandblasted stainless clip would be OK. I guess it would add too much to the price but I, for one, wouldn't care how much it cost.

Sal, email sent.

Hi Clay,

I've had this thought as well and I'm sure we could get consenus for real titanium scales in about three seconds. Unfortunately manufacturing titanium scales and aluminum ones require totally different tooling. AFAIK, aluminum scales are typically stamped, whereas titanium needs specialized machining.

It is up to Spyderco of course, whether they'd want to retool for the handle (this is $$$ and time), and the resulting knife would have a very premium price point. I'd prefer it, but we have a better chance of seeing this actually materialize if Sal proposes this with Almite scales.

I've started a vote thread so that everyone can vote specifically for an Almite color. A lot of people have posted for alternate materials without giving opinions on an Almite preference.

I would buy one if it was alum but just think of the great ionizeing that can be done on Ti. ;)
I don't know if it can be done on alum knife scales and I don't think I have ever seen it on a knife but the Type III HA finnish surefire uses would look great.

If there are significant objections to burgundy, how about a good real purple? That seems to be popular for annodized aluminum stuff.

Would the knife cost more if damascus lamination be used like in the mcusta knives. They are both made in Seki, Japan. They are really nice!!

Fair enough Carlos. I was assuming that the aluminium blanks were CNC cut rather than stamped. Obviously the Ti scales are out of the question if they require a change in production methods.

I like where this is going! This would be a very impressive knife...combining style and top performance.

I don't care what color this is made in as long as it is made.

I don't care whether is is laminated or solid ZDP-189 as long as tested toughness is similar. If either is tougher in testing, that is the one I want.

I want Torx fasteners. Not phillips heads. Not hex. Torx please.

By the way Sal, you RULE!

totaly agree with spyderknut
there are colours i prefer but i'll have one what ever
as for steel havent got to try either yet

Be sure to go to the "sticky" and vote your color and blade configeration. We need this knife.

A low production run of a special knife. Usally around 1200 pieces. Spyderco is one cool a** knife co. for doing this kind of thing! :D

I'm in on this one!

I think the gold spyderbug on the blade would take away from Bob Lum's maker mark though. Unless you place it on the reverse side.

I have seen alot of guys talking about spending upwards to $200 for this knife but I'm not sure if it is a good idea. When it comes time to "cough up" the money it may be a little too much depending on the time of the year for a lot of folks. Although a nice high end carbon fiber handled version would be great.

The handle material and the color doesn't really matter to me as long as it isn't pink or some feminine color. An FRN handle may not be bad. Some guys may actually want a user Lum while others may want a more collectible version. That's a toss up.

I prefer the laminated version of the blade as well.

Bob Lum talked about Spyderco doing a version of his larger field grade tanto fixed blade with a 5" to 5.5" blade. I would personally like to see this as well with a slightly higher grade of steel than the FB03. I don't know if Spyderco will ever produce it but I would like to have one or two. :D

For now the Chinese folder seems like a super idea!
