Decided to try this one out in case it becomes too difficult to find later. The grain is excellent as is the fit and finish. The first lock back from GEC I’ve held. No play in any direction. A few scuffs on the bolsters, but nothing significant. Very sharp! Not sure what to think about the pattern yet. I like it better in hand than the 44 which has a similar sized butt. The straight line taper and thin width feel pretty good. I think it may even rival the 47 sway back in feel. It isn’t the prettiest thing to look at though.

Lots of people are reporting scuffs on bolsters. I’ve had that with a 46 Whaler from this recent run. It’s the reason I’m not crazy about satin bolsters.

I have not noticed satin bolsters being any better/worse than polished with little rubs. But a very small investment in a buffer with a soft wheel and a sisal wheel would offer a quick facelift either way.

I know what your saying as far as the satin having almost a brushed like finish so you have to be careful .
I think Mikes suggestion :thumbsup: would definitely do the trick especially if you just follow the direction of the brush marks and hit it lightly .
For me being a collector and very light user I’d be ok with it and more concerned with fit and finish of the covers and other areas but that’s just me and of course .

Doesn’t bother me. I’d say collectors ought not worry about a flawless production knife. Character marks are cool, imho
 
Just to clarify and so not to throw rocks when Living in a glass house :)
I’m very passionate about our hobby and knives like many of us and I’ve come to realize I’m overly emotional sometimes of my expectations and not realizing it until the smoke clears and calm down.I’m trying and learning to get a handle on it lol. For many reasons one being it’s not fair to our dealers and manufacturers in most cases. So I’m trying to be a better person and that is a area I’m trying to turn over a new leaf in .
On a brighter note aren’t these 99’s just a work of art . Bravo to Gec and our beloved dealers to make them available to us knife nuts :D

I agree we should not be so hypercritical over production knives even small batch productions. As for small nicks and hair size scratches, off centered blades and non locking lock bars,Yes! Just as "one man's trash is another man's treasure" Hair sized scratches are another man's Character marks. Every diamond has its flaws

I should also clarify that it’s not enough of an issue to keep me from buying a model with satin bolsters, and that I received a chestnut 99 yesterday with no such marks. I just find they show scuffs more easily.

I like knifeswapper knifeswapper Mike’s idea of buying a buffer, because I love any excuse to add a tool to the shop. :D
 
I missed the early reserve on these and really like the looks of them so I guess it's time to keep an eye on the exchange.
 
In the year 2525, this run of GEC model 99 knives with scuffed from the factory bolsters, will be proof of authenticity and genuineness of original finish.

The scuff marks will be highly sought after, and the scuffier the more the knife will be worth, except for fake scuffs, which is a huge problem in 2525 since these knives are stainless and more than half of the run remains accounted for by collectors.

When I saw the scuff marks on this one I just tossed it in the recycling.
