Case Seahorse

The second video was even better. Your are better at making video's than you think Gary. :-)

Both the picture and your comment were clear and easy to follow!

Great video Gary! That sheath is amazing. Love how it "snaps" into place. Probably worth more than the knife!

Since the knife is a whittler, I decided to try and whittle. I got some pine dowel and decided that a simple Tiki would be nice. I sharpened the blades up a bit with my DMT fine hone, and went to work. The main blade works great, but I found the coping blade to be the most useful - the pen blade not so much.

That's as far as I got before calling it quits. I've got arthritis in the hands so I new it would be a tough go - and it was! Whittling is hard work! The knife was comfortable to hold when using the main or smaller blades, but if I were going to whittle as a hobby - I would get one of those fat handled small bladed dedicated whittling knives.

I like both looks. After the re-coloring the bone, how much did the bolsters change in color? It looks like it's a rose gold or copper color now. Kinda cool.

Well, I did it. I just couldn't take the "Moss Brown" coloring any longer. I love the knife so far (haven't whittled but it does everything else I need in an edc) and it is a great example of what Case can do with fit and finish. I love the worm groove jigging so the knife is great - except for the hideous murky swamp covering those gorgeous bone scales!

So, I followed this thread:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/868446-Dyeing-Bone-A-Tutorial

I used the black Rit powder dye going for full black. It didn't come out full black, but maybe better? Very subtle swamp under the mostly black layer of death that has descended upon it.

It struck me that this is the best the knife has looked since I got it! When I'm about to bring it to a simmer! I wasn't fooled - it was a trick. (And, that WAS her good side.)

Now:

The bolsters are the bonus - they have a copper look now.

The bolsters turned a copper color - but it must have been a very thin layer of oxidation as they have turned back to the silver color. I am very pleased with the color change - the knife has a classy look now instead of garish.

Eric

Garish is out, classy is in ;) but some of those photos circling around of the moss green do look nice, I bet you were a bit taken back when you slid her out.

And let us know if that bolster colour starts to fade quickly, sure looks nice that way !

Snippy,
Job well done. A great improvement in the scale color. The bolster finish is simply outstanding IMO.

Well guys, I went to the Lewisburg PA knife show today and picked up a girlfriend for my other Seahorse, a real beaut made back in 2010 ONLY for the Case collector club members, limited edition just for them of 500 pieces, mine is # 449.

It comes in this really nice wooden framed box, with a laser engraved top that simulates a Seahorse folder as well as details what is inside, plus a nice metal medallion set into the wood.

The knife is the essence of a safe queen if ever I saw one ;) nice scroll work on the bolsters, the XX stands for both the XX Tested Case as well as 2010 issue of the knife, I am pretty happy to luck into this, as it was not available to the open public so to find one in mint condition is truly a nice find. The fit and finish of this was just above my diamond shielded one, PLUS all three blades would slice receipt paper, something my other one could only think about until I rectified the situation, so a bit more attention I think was awarded to these folders.

Here are some quick photos of the wooden case and knife;

All in all, a real neat find, I think my first Seahorse was smiling when I picked her up !

That's about as " Cool " as is possible to achieve on this Earth .
Please tell me your going to use it ?
I think it would be cool to use your " working " one during the week , and have your " Special " one for Sundays and Church .
Does it fit in your sheath ?

Holy cow! I reckon that is truly a great find! It's gorgeous! The colors even compliment your first one! Thanks for sharing this beauty! Enjoy!:thumbup:

That's a great idea Ken, the knife is overall slimmer than the other one, so while it can fit into the sheath, it is not as tight fitting which in a way is even better, less marking from the inside of the sheath but is still retained enough to wear, unless I try to run an obstacle course!

edited to add, we were typing at the same time Michael, thanks sir, it is great!

also edited again to include this shot of the inside of the top of the box;

That is a work of art - just gorgeous! It's the King of the Seahorses. Enjoy it!

Eric

Thanks Eric, I'm labeling her the Queen though, as she is slimmer and prettier than her rough and tumble boyfriend ;)

And it's nice not to have to tune these edges up, while they are sharp, they always could be sharper :) but I'll hold off on sharpening them for a while.

That's a great find, Gary! It will make a fine special occasion carry. Case does a real nice job on their embellished knives, also their Damascus knives. A bit more attention to detail which I don't mind paying extra for.

Thanks Gary, it is a real treat, can't wait to bring this to work tomorrow and show her off :)

Gary,
Thank You for taking the time to show me Your new Limited Edition Seahorse at the
Keystone Knife Show. Case put a lot of effort into this Collectors Knife and it shows.
I think the Cabernet color compliments Your first Seahorse.
It was interesting that You had showed me Your Seahorse and not long after that You had
a second one. It was like it was waiting for You to take it home.
Have fun at work tomorrow. :)

Eric,
Your Re-Dying of Your Seahorse turned out GREAT, it looks CLASSY,
hopefully the bolsters will retain the nice copper color.

Being a Life Member of the CCC, I got the offer for one of those, but never got around to sending for it! Foolish me!
Great-looking knife, with extra attention to make it a superior product!
A winner sure enough!

Thanks Charlie, it's fast becoming my favourite model :)

Took it to work again today to show a friend that wasn't there yesterday, he was quite impressed by it's fit and finish!

G2,
Your photos really do Your Seahorse justice, VERY WELL DONE.
( The reflection in the table is cool also. )

Thanks Tim, it's a bit slimmer than the Diamond Jack, as I'm want to call him ;)
