Cold Steel Strider rip-0ff

YAWN!!!!! This thread agains? sheesh!!!!! All I will say is that for $30, the CS knife is priced like a throwaway so if it is even halfway decent, which the selection of 1055 indicates that it COULD be, then it's is probably a screamin deal IF you have the need for a mall ninja super tanto with a kite string handle. I for one, do not. As for Striders.......well, lets just say that my eyebrows raise a bit when I see machine blanked and ground blades selling for prices starting at $325 and a $50 upcharge to replace the paracord with flat slabs of fiberglass, regardless of what kind of super stainless they are made of. To paraphrase the name of this subforum, civilized discussion and debate is "good", Super Sensei LT and Mogadishu Mick may be "bad" and these knives are undeniably UGLY!!!! I'll just stick with trying to hammer out some decent, rugged and ATTRACTIVE knives from W2 and be at peace with the world. By the way........I didn't "run" with any "heavy hitters" at Camp Blanding or Avon Park when I was in the Reserves nor did I engage in any "black ops" in Ft. Lauderdale, nor have I been trying to gather all of the "warriors" in the world for a great sword swingin' love fest, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night:D

like i said before its sure tacky imho for one smith to bash another smith, matters not who does it.

its simply not "attractive" imho.

I know........it's late and after 100+ pages of Strider this and Thompson that over the last month or two, I guess I just went off a bit:eek: It happened the last time one of these threads went over 40 pages. I love the eccentric guys and gals that you meet in the knife game. I just had the opportunity to hang out with Larry Hrley, Steve Schwarzer, Ray Kirk, Dickie Robinson,Chris Marks and Don Hanson and a slew of other interesting and sometimes eccentric folks at Batsons. Any one of those guys could be described as characters, but they were FUN characters. No hostility, no name calling, even if they didn't agree with you. Nothing like the vitriol that we see whever this topic pops up in one of these threads. My blood pressure is back down now, so I will do my own form of penance and drive on......sorry to anyone who makes tactical knives of that type for calling them ugly........what I really mean is that they are not my taste, but I am merely one "stuck in 1870" knifemaking schlub:D And Jerry.......I said that I was TRYING to forge attactive knives. Did't say that I was there yet;) I posted an early pic of a southwestern bowie blade that I am working on in the Maker's section. Perhaps it is serendipity, but after forging, anealing, grinding, and normalizing, it is as close to a perfect balde as i have gotten in my short career as a hack smith:D It gets clayed up and heat treated tomorrow. I'll post more pics if it survives:eek:

OK I admit i didn't read the last 63 pages, but I imagined that ol Burger picked up some good old shank making trix in the pokey. I bet he would have patented his tanto whatever knife, but c'mon what was he suppose to say "excuse me warden but could you help me patent this sha...I mean knife I made?" Strider knives might have seen some combat in Mickeys hands, but it was probably while ole Burger was a guest of the D.O.J. and not S.O.F.

Back to the original post.... nobody but an ass would use such low handed text in trying to push their product... in my opinion.

An opinion I agree with wholeheartedly.

I agree with both of you.

Doesn't matter whom you side with, what he is doing is despicable, honorless and has essentially kicked hiself to the lowest place possible in the industry.

I've owned one CS blade. Even that was one too many. Never again!:grumpy:

whatever, FWIW a lot of us are not "stuck in 1870" (thank goodness i am not lol)

Tank Abbott, you mean?

However, I see your point. That said, did you read his interview?

Some gems:

"I killed two Cape Buffalo with a spear and recently in Australia I killed two wild boar with a spear."

"I studied Business at College because I couldn't see much success coming from a History major (though I could've flown through it)."

"But we are different, we want to promote the warrior arts. It costs me $30-40 thousand a year to host."

"I tried for four years to make knives in America and I lost about $700,000".

"I used to wear out the soles of my shoes shadowboxing on the asphalt driveway."

There are many, many more either a) dollar amounts he throws out or b) "look at me, I'm a bad ass!" comments made.

He throws out more pseudo-badass nonsense in one interview than I've ever read/heard come from Mick. And he's the moral high-ground in this community?

Laughing. Out. Loud.

I have to agree with you brother! :D

Doesn't matter how low he or anyone thinks his self-imposed opponents lie, Lynn Thompson chooses to stoop and kick-himself to a much lower place.

Too funny.

I suppose that if you can't beat them, insult them until someone pays more attention to you....just not for love of your own knives....:D Way to go LT.

I don't think that he is trying to beat Strider. As far as I can tell, CS and Strider aren't competitors, other than that they both make knives. They are not competing for the same segment of the knife buying public.

Personally, I just think that LT marches to his own drummer and doesn't care what anyone else thinks of what he does. He obviously feels that it is his duty to bring to people's attention things about the knife industry that he feels are wrong.

Actually, i vacilate between 1870 and 1940-70 or so.....Randall, Moran, Loveless (because I like his work but I don't make knives in that style) etc., when it comes to inspiration for military type knives.

To be honest I dislike both brands either. My most precious blades are two from Mr. Chris Reeve, and one of the late Mr. Al Mar, now those are gentlemen knifemakers.

Hey, we're in total agreement there! I'm not a fan of either of the companies we've been discussing, but I am a very big fan of Chris Reeve and Al Mar.

Al Mar was more than a gentleman, he was also Special Forces. His designs are refreshing for their spareness and line, and he is missed.

I am sick of this Cold Steel verses Strider thing. Why can't Cold Steel just find something new to talk about like making a knife here in the USA.

:barf:

& everyone is so sick about hashing out strider this and strider that they were happy to see it go.............

Anyone buy the thing? I'm patiently waiting for test results.

I came into one via a friend. He ordered a couple and this showed up at my door.

It's interesting. Not good or bad, just interesting.

I guess since I've never handled the similar Strider knife, I cannot say how the two compare. All of the corners and such are radiused, which gives it a softer hand-feel, which is a huge bonus if you will not be wearing gloves at all times.

In terms of how it feels in the hand, awkward is the first word that comes to mind. Due to the awkward feeling in the hand, I'd be genuinely concerned about a hard stick or smash into something unforgiving, say like an oil drum, ammo can, hard meat and bone. The handle gives me no confidence in my ability to hold onto it when dynamically accessing a target medium (hoo, boy, is that a load of PC garbage.)

I believe this is because the handle itself seems to be on the narrow/ slender side in comparison to the size of the blade it is off-setting. Overall, if the handle was slightly larger, I think the entire presentation would be different and more positive.

I've had it sitting in my desk drawer for about a week now, maybe sometime this summer I'll have a chance to put this to good use. However, since a knife of this design is intended in someone's mind as a hard-use combat and conflict-resolution tool, I'd really want to give it a spin while working a bunch of kali/ arnis drills, as well as a bunch of slam-jam knife drills and see what the feedback is thru that route. My gut feeling is that like the Strider (any Strider) it would be hard to seriously damage or break this thing, and this does exhibit a surprising degree of finishing. However, since like everyone else here, I've got my own ideas about what a really good working blade is for me, I'll not be hopeful about this one retiring any of my current preferred blades.

I would be willing to bet if it had a more conventional clip- or drop-point profile, the in-hand balance would be more in tune with my own preference, but again, there are guys out there who want the Tanto look and design. If you want a $30 alternative, this may be the way to go. Time will tell.

I just ordered one of these knives along with two other models from the same series. I want to put them through some paces and see how they do. Each knife was around $20.00. They are going to have have to be really crappy to not be worth that.
