Intros all around

Howdy folks. My name is Bill. I'm currently retired at 64 and living the good life in northern New Mexico. I grew up mostly in Texas, but took a job at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1978, and I've been a confirmed desert rat ever since.

I have two sons from my first marriage. Here's my first born, David:

David is an architectural lighting designer and trains in mixed martial arts.

My younger son, Kevin works at the corporate offices of a national restaurant chain. He and his wife, Jami, are both marathoners.

I've always enjoyed athletic activities and loved the outdoors. In 1962 I was a high school quarter miler.

Twenty years later, in 1982, I moved on to longer races. This pic was taken after the Los Alamos High Altitude Mini Marathon (20 km at 7500 ft). Incidently, that's Kevin beside me.

In 1991 I married Karen.

What can I say. Karen is the love of my life. Here's a pic I took last year before one of our weekly dinner dates in Santa Fe:

When I meet people who only knew me during my first marriage, I introduce Karen as my "favorite" wife. (What else can you say? "This is my second wife." Or, "This is my current wife." No.)

As my age continued to increase (funny how that happens), I gave up running for hiking. Karen took this pic at the Painted Desert trailhead in 1994.

In 2007 I did a three day trek to the floor of the Grand Canyon and back out. What an adventure!

Finally, last Spring Karen and I vacationed in Texas. She took this pic in Kerrville:

Whew! And that concludes the story of how I spent my first 64 years. :D

Hey Doc Canada are ya gonna put some pics on ? Mrs Pit want's to see what ya look like, I told her you were a handsome devil but she still wants pics !!!!

I'll play.

My name is John I'm 41 with a super wife of 6 years a 4 year old daughter and an 18 month old son. I've been a lot of things from an attorney to the manager of a Hardware store. I am now a Stay at Home Dad during the day and a librarian part time at night and on the weekend.

I fish, I shoot single-action cowboy shooting, and I have a thing for collecting sharp pointy steel.

Howdy folks I'm Mike and I'm powerless over my addiction to knives.
Archery and motorcycles are my other passions. A former Marine, life time martial artiest, and practitioner of primitive living skills. A serious injury slowed me down alot but I still found the Trout.

Jeez I better get in on this too!

My name is Geordie, and I'm a 31 year old high school dropout (have all of grade 9 though!) During the day, I'm a construction worker - mostly what I do is pile driving for big projects. It's all right...real brute work though! Happily I am far enough along that I don't spend as much time down in the hole anymore...a lot of my day would just be making sure everybody is actually working, and not so much time dragging giant hydraulic hoses and fittings around...although that sure kept me in shape!

At night I go to university so I can finish off my degree(s). Actually my background is like Brian's...international relations. I had to talk my way in to university because I didn't do much high school, but if there is one thing I know for sure, it's this: there is ALWAYS a workaround!

My dad was a geological engineer and spent most of his life taking very low paying jobs, as long as they would send him out to the middle of nowhere by himself, and then leave him alone. For years he was a prospector and his only human contact was a helicopter pilot he saw for a few minutes every three weeks when he traded mineral samples for 3 more weeks of food. My mom was a stay-at-home mom with a degree in history of art and a masters in the history of public policy, I think. They are both interesting people but I don't know them very well. I have two sisters; one is a university prof and the other is a visual artist.

I guess I inherited my love of the wilderness from my dad, and also my general dislike for social obligation. But unlike him I am pretty extroverted which I got from my mother, and which makes my life complicated: I am a misanthropic loner who wants to be in the wilderness all the time...but who really wants to socialize and be friendly!

On account of my dad's background, he never thought anything about giving me knives and guns as a kid (when I saw him and when he spoke which is very rare!) So I grew up with moras and slipjoints and didn't realize until I was in my twenties that lots of guys don't. Also I shoot a lot, and now, my dad comes to me for advice about knives and guns, which as you can imagine makes me a bit proud.

I also play in a band, like apparently 99% of us here - only I am the mouthpiece and I also hold a guitar on stage. I would describe the sound as a combination of Chuck Berry and Mike Tyson punching you in the face. I used to play more metal stuff but these days it's just very raunchy, redneck rock music. It's only a hobby for me but I could possibly figure out how to post some sometime if anybody is interested (I won't be offended if you're not!)

My other big hobby is survivalism or "prepping" as seems to be the in-fashion term these days. It goes with my interest in both wilderness survival and my paranoid habit of stockpiling guns and ammo. It wasn't much of a stretch to stockpile food as well...

I bought the SAS survival guide when I was 14 and I have had some sort of Altoids-type kit since about that time.

Also I am probably best known for my girlfriend who is very hot and doesn't wear much and who used to be a professional dominatrix. I met her because she needed a bodyguard for a while (wealthy stalkers) and somebody recommended me to her, so I took a cut of her business and sorted out a bunch of client issues she had. Then it turned into that Kevin Costner movie and I don't remember the rest. Anyway she got out of that line of work but she still looks the part which suits me.

I think that's about everything...holy cow what a ramble!

Anyway here are some pictures...read the captions and you get an exciting bonus story!

strathcona036.jpg

I'm on the right here. This is on a trip through Strathcona Park on Vancouver Island. At this point we'd been on the trail for about 6 days. This is probably around 9 am...we had hiked about 1 km that morning and gained maybe 400m in altitude.

strathcona038.jpg

Up ahead is Mount Albert Edward, one of the tallest on the island. That is stop number one! Altitude 2063 meters, I think. We started that morning around 800 meters.

strathcona056.jpg

It's sure beautiful up there...looking north the mountains go on forever and there is practically no-one up there, not for miles and miles and miles. The biggest town in this direction is probably 5,000 people tops, until you get to Anchorage, Alaska!

strathcona100.jpg

Now here I am in the late afternoon of the same day, on top of Castlecrag mountain. Behind me are Mount Frink, left, and Mount Albert Edward, right. We summited all three that day, total elevation gain and loss of about 3 km total (1km up, 500m down, 400m up, 600m down, 500m up, 1km down. That was a long, tough hike! This is one of my favourite pictures because you can see the three peaks we climbed that day perfectly and you get a sense of how far it all was!

strathcona118.jpg

That night we slept at a small lake...this is the next morning. I caught rainbows for breakfast...they were great!

Finally I guess I can't mention the gf without posting a pic, so here is a "wilderness" shot.

We're F****NG CANADIAN EH!!!

Cheers team!

I sometimes dress like that while hiking and people laugh...wtf ????

I'm bettin' its the belly button ring. You probably should have asked for some opinions before getting it. I mean really pitdog. Not bad on a hot chick, but on a guy that likes to dress like a cave man?

:p:D

For those who don't know me, I'm a hermit who makes knives fulltime. :D When I'm not in the shop, I'm at home or in the woods. I do work my 30 plus year job 2 nites (11:00 pm to 7:00 am) a week for the health benefits. I'm 49 years old, married for 30 years, two kids. My son is 27, daughter 17. My daughter is a very talented artist and musician. My son enjoys playing music and working. My wife works for the library system in the county I live in. I live in a rural community made up of family farms. My outdoor passion is whitetail hunting on a 300 acre farm I've hunted for 20 years.

I'm Sam, a long time member here at Bladeforums. I read a lot, but rarely post (I try to keep it to useful, intelligent posts, therefore the low post count :) . I'm married w/ 2 young boys (5 & 2). I work as a Physician Assistant, primarily in general surgery/vascular surgery. My background was a bachelors from the University of Connecticut (Biology), as well as 5 years in the CT Army National Guard (medic). I've always liked to hike & camp, and still make it outside as much as I can, but not nearly as often as I'd like. I had many years of martial arts training in my younger days (7-8 years total between Goju-Ryu Karate & Judo), but haven't seen a Dojo in a long time.

Here's a pic of me & the boys - I'm the slightly taller one.

My turn! I am Kris (31), that is me in my avatar after I broke both legs skydiving, which has pretty much ruled my life for the past 15 months. I have a biology degree focused on Entomology, but never worked in that field. I am currently finishing my first semester in Massage Therapy, fighting my insurance company over my disability status. I love being back in school (I love learning and the 40:6 girl:guy ratio does not hurt) and really look forward to being a stay at home dad and evening massage therapist (at least that is the plan right now). Like others I have trained in the martial arts, Traditional jujitsu for 10 years and would have earned my black belt a week after my legs broke but now will be at least another year before I can start again. I love MMA and live vicariously through the fighters as I can't hurt my friends right now.
I was married July 19th, and have a 2.5 year old daughter and another little parasite resides in my wife right now. I love knives of all kinds and am planning on making them for the rest of my life, although I am VERY slow at it, and my basement shop limits my machinery choices; but hey I have the time.

Here are the important ladies in my life:

I played the Oboe for years and now play the Juice harp/Jews Harp/ Bombarde/ Dugdugi (however you want to say it), and would love to hear from others that play as well as it is VERY hard to find quality ones up here and most of mine have broken from too much Fireside playing.
