Bad Survive! Deserves A Permanent Post In The Hall Of Shame

Man, this thread is massive…I can’t possibly begin to catch up with it, but I’ll add my experience.

I have purchased 3 blades from Survive! Knives.

The first order was placed in March 2022 for a GSO 4.5 Bushcraft and a GSO 8…both in 3V. I received the 4.5 in April 2022, but waited until January 2023 for the GSO 8.

I placed this order via a phone call with Ellie. I had no idea at the time how “lucky” I was to get ahold of someone by calling them. She was very helpful and nice, and I had no issues with the order.

The knives are basically flawless…some of the best production fixed blades that I own. I have zero complaints with the actual products.

The second order was placed online in April 2022 for a GSO 5.1 in MagnaCut. I have not received the knife yet, and I am somewhat doubtful that I ever will at this point.

I have watched all of Guy’s YouTube updates, so I am fully aware of the situation. I have emailed and called them many times in the past year or so, but have never received any response. I have resulted to commenting on YouTube that I cannot ever get ahold of anyone, and I’d just like to know the status of my order, but my comments seem to get deleted.

So I have a mixed experience with Survive! The first order went fine, even though I waited a long time for the second knife. I knew there would be a wait when I ordered it.

The second order has been pretty crappy. I see what all the complaints are about now. If they would just respond to their customers (I don’t think they’re even checking voicemails or emails honestly) it would be somewhat okay. But the complete lack of communication just sucks. I still want the knife, so I’ll give it more time, but I’ll never order from them again.

For the people that don't know how YouTube works on comments, the channel owner can set the comments so they ALL have to be approved. This seems to be what S!K has done. So they are not technically "deleting" comments. The only comments they approve are positive ones or, in some rare cases, some slightly negative or questioning ones that they want to respond to. So you can't overload them with comments that they won't have time to delete before they are seen.

Thanks - I didn’t know that. Seems about right.

That’s also how I read it, based on what I know about Guy’s never-ending pestering. A true W. C. Fields moment. The unfortunate part is that it can be read as confirmation of an issue, which is currently the only evidence Guy is publishing.

Pretty weak no matter how you read it, though.
The fact is that NSM had previously agreed to, and had in fact sent steel to Survive! simply on their mere report of having had issues, providing exemplary customer service.

This was their way of conducting business on the up and up, trying to keep a customer happy and maintaining a cordial relationship. No requirement for x-rays, spectrometry, lab reports etc...and all done on their own dime...simply based upon the report of issues.

Naturally, as we've come to learn, this would be seen as weakness by Survive! resulting in their attempt to parlay NSM's goodwill into a windfall of both cash and material.

And all it netted Survive! in the end was their approaching Crucible hat in hand admitting that they had handled the matter poorly and asking to be able to get more steel from them. Crucible telling Survive! that they don't process and sell the steel in the manner they require, and that they would need to get that from NSM...which at that point had had enough of Guy's attempts to throw them, (and everyone else he's ever dealt with, for that matter), under the bus.

Sooner or later you have to take your comeuppance and pay the piper.

(Of course, this won't keep Survive! from trying to find another clueless fish to fry until their luck runs completely out.)

You guys are mean but you had no idea that Guy is going to fund the return of Survive when his new venture rakes in MILLIONS! He just needs a few more investors who will be seeing a HUGE return in a matter of weeks and it's gonna be AMAZING!

From the Survive YouTube comments.

Survive!: “V-4 and V-4.5 orders will be moving through finishing shortly. The Pikal is about to begin profile machining and the V-5.5 and V-7 orders will begin shortly, as we're moving these other projects to their forever homes. We are hauling ass now, it will not take long to get this squared away.”

I don’t even remember this series. Also, the same song and dance as always.

Well put, E. I hope that those details are not lost on the people that could really use some perspective.

Have two on order, one since February 2021(!). EDC-2 and an EDC -2.7. $278.50 total. Honestly with kids off to college, changed jobs, no excuses, just time went by. Saw this thread a few weeks ago, tried emailing and calling. Crickets. Posted questions in Guys comments on his YouTube videos. Nada. That’s about all the goodwill I have. Filed a complaint online just now with the Pennsylvania AG, will head to my bank Tuesday and see what can be done about the CC charges (it’s a credit union, they’re good about helping members).

Thanks for the counsel/guidance!

Like most kids growing up in the 1960s, Sea Hunt was a TV staple. My middle brother and I would do underwater “Sea Hunt fights” at the community pool. He’s long gone…

Mike Nelson was a hero. I'm a 50's kid.

In the latest "MagnaCut Decarburizing Conclusion" video, if I am understanding correctly, he claims that Peter's was doing heat treat incorrectly because it was more convenient, and he lost 857 blades to their error. He also claims they admitted it during a visit at Peter's and the NDA is preventing him from showing any evidence. Am I getting that right? Was there any statement from Peter's about any of this?
[EDIT] Corrected number of "lost parts"

If that was the case, Peter’s would have replaced the affected inventory, just like Niagara offered to replace the Magnacut. He would have been out zero money or product.

There are lots of makers and manufacturers building knives with MagnaCut blades who coincidentally use Peters for their heat treat.

Where is the hue and cry? Surely we'd have had some sense of it by now. After all, this is a widely known knife forum with many well connected members, makers, and manufacturers.

Crickets.

Are we seeing a pattern here yet?

Guy has posted two videos on decarb and heat treating. In the first of the two videos, he claims "...Peters heat treating they did a follow up straightening with an acetylene torch..."

I will again reiterate, Guy has made wild claims. I have yet to see ANY proof other than a few blades with damage. Was that defective metal? Was it bad heat treating? Was it an inexperienced and incompetent knife maker doing stupid stuff? Who knows. A lot of other knife makers use Magnacut and have no issues. Guy talks a lot, and offers no proof. He also has outstanding orders from 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and this year.

Im glad you filed that. I did one two weeks ago maybe? The AG office will email you to let you know whats up, so keep an eye on your junk/spam. Hopefully they will notice more than one in a short time and look closer.

Also file at IC3.gov
