I think many sellers on this forum still don't realize that it is their obligation to make sure that the buyer gets his package safely.
More specifically, there is a widespread confusion about insurance: insurance does not protect the buyer, it protects the seller in case the knife gets lost or damaged and he has to refund the buyer. I am sick of sellers who offer insurance separately because they seem to imply that it is up to the buyer to cover his shipment.
Maybe a sticky would help clarify this issue...

Agreed 100%

I eat the insurance every time as IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY in the first place and PROTECTS MY OBLIGATION.

Amen to that bro!!

First of all I want to say that I am very sorry that the knife was lost. Unfortunately the loss of the knife is not my fault. I do not feel that I was irresponsible in packing and shipping the BOSS Street in a Flat Rate Envelope. This packaging is rated up to 4 lbs. if shipped internationally, and higher domestically. What does a BOSS Street weigh, 10 oz.? Being generous, a total of a pound at most with the packing material. I have shipped MANY knives in the same packaging and have not had a knife lost, or the packaging severely damaged in transit. I take care in my packing, and make sure the knife won’t move around when shipped. It’s not like I tried to cram a bare-bladed Battle Mistress in the envelope and send it on its way. The blade was secured in cardboard, wrapped in layers of packing paper, and taped shut with packing peanuts surrounding it.
In my sales thread I offered Priority Mail shipping ONLY, and nothing more. Any extra coverage or security was not advertised. And at the point of sale, extra coverage or security was not requested, and therefore, not applied when shipped. I have offered to refund half of the purchase price, and meet you halfway. The knife no longer exists, so the only thing left is the money. It is unreasonable to expect me to refund you the full purchase price, or to send you an entirely new knife. There will always be a level of risk when shipping, and receiving, an item. I’m not trying to rip you off here…..
On the other side of the coin, Ivan51, how do I know that you aren’t the one trying to rip me off? You make a public spectacle of this, and expect to peer pressure me into giving you your money back (or get another knife)? In your first contact to me, when the package arrived, you claim that there was a “little hole” in the envelope, and no knife.....

"hey i just got home and got your package and there is a little hole on the side but no busse! my wife got it when it was delivered by the mail and called me saying there felt like there was no knife in it. man did you insure it?"

.....Then you send me this picture:

......I don’t see a “little hole,” I see the entire side of the envelope cut open. Whats up with that? Who’s to say you didn’t cut the package, take the knife, and are now claiming that there was nothing in the envelope but packing peanuts? I’m not out to make you look like the bad guy, just like you’re not out to make me look like the bad guy. You are being unreasonable. It is what it is. I hereby withdraw my offer to refund half of the purchase price, and I will no longer discuss this issue……

Verpus 77 up until now you have 30 positive feedback. Why on earth would you negate that reputation by writing the above. It takes time to earn that, but only a minute of unfiltered anger and childishness to destroy it. Go outside take a deep breath, and then do what it takes to try and repair your rep before you do permanent damage. On another note as Esav pointed out if you had refunded half the money, this would be a whole different discussion. As it is your behaviour calls for nothing less than a 100% refund, ya shot yourself in the foot!!!:(

This sums it up perfectly. Once I recieve the money it's my responsibility to ensure the knife arrives safely.

No you offered to deliver a knife for a price. The Buyer fulfilled his obligations and you didn’t.

As stated previously- the knife was improperly packed and any insurance claim would have been rejected because of how you chose to pack the knife.

Bryan (verpus77),

90% of your post are in the exchange forum.
You might as well write that forum off. No one in their right mind would deal with you now.
You pack inadequately (even if insured the p.o. wouldn't pay out on), and you don't complete the deal.
Now neither one of you are happy but people just wont deal with you over the way you've handled this...while the OP still has his rep intact.

If the bottom-line is basically, "Screw ALL of you here on BladeForums!", and the refusal to make this deal right in even the very slightest way then, IMHO, a swift banishment is in order.....no need for arrogant, rip-off, scumbags hanging around. :thumbdn:

yep! thats what im thinking to:D

just took care of that dttomcat:D i like in the end of his post how he is trying to make me out to be the bad guy. he is not the one out $220!!! Verpus77 or Bryan hope you choke on that $$$$

Spark just changed the Exchange policy so the seller must, by default, insure all packages unless the buyer explicitly says he does not want insurance, and then the buyer is completely responsible for lost/damaged goods. Great move by Spark.

That should work. :D

Sooo, we are saying the seller has to ask the buyer specifically if he, the buyer, will pay for insurance? Or is the buyer now required to buy the insurance? Just askin, I think insurance is always a good idea, but just do not think it should be a requirement.

I ship/shipped quite a few knives in the $50 to $150 range. I usually ask the buyer if they want to pay for insurance and they routinly decline. I ship mostly in USPS priority boxes or padded evelopes and take care to pack everything carefully.

I do disagree with the statement that that the seller is entirely responsible to get the item to the buyer, period. The seller is responsible for adequately packing the item, but once in the hands of the USPS or UPS etc. his responsibility should cease.

Agree? Or not?

The seller needs to insure that the buyer gets what he paid for.

No ifs, ands or buts, period......................

Just watch out for retaliatory iTrader feed back. After all, you're the bad guy here.

-Tye

I thought about that too, but at this point, what would Verpus say? " :( The buyer left me negative feedback because I kept his $220 and didn't deliver"??
